16 month old still not walking

I hope I'm over reacting but he still isn't walking!!

She cruises around the furniture will walk when you hold her hands and web runs. Just will not even try to walk on her own!

I stand her up against the wall where he leans on it, then I move away and try to encourage her to walk but she will either slide down the wall or literally throw her self at me :(

Help

16 months is well within the normal range for starting to walk.

She is weight bearing and cruising, so progressing well, she'll get there!

BlingBubbles · 15/05/2012 19:42

Dont worry, she will do it when she is ready. A friend of mine took her 2 year old DD to the pead as she wasnt walking and the pead said there was nothing wrong with her she was just lazy, and that was at 2. So try not to worry too much, I know it can be hard when your kids dont do things in the "normal" time of doing it.

Don't worry, DD was 22 months old before she walked - bottom-shuffled before then. Two of her (walking) cousins came round to play, she watched them walk into the garden, stood up and followed them. This was after me spending 6 months fretting and taking her to the GP, who said she would walk when ready. I guess she realised there were more advantages to walking than not! She's now 13 and loves athletics.

latrucha · 15/05/2012 20:01

My DD would cruise but wouldn't crawl, get up to sitting from lying down, pull up on furniture or shuffle until she was nearly 18 months. Then she did it all in the space of a week.

She's the same about everything!

StarMeKitten · 15/05/2012 20:04

My 16mo DD is exactly like yours katy, she cruises but will not attempt to walk on her own. I think the worst thing is peoples reactions when I say she still not walking.

xkatyx · 15/05/2012 20:08

Thank you all do much, yes everyone's comments don't help at all.

I just can't ever imagine her walking .. She Seam's so scared poor thing!!
I think I would prob my burst into tears if she just got up and walked :)

I know exactly how you feel :)

pinkandsparklytoo · 15/05/2012 20:13

My nearly 17 month old doesn't walk on his own. He crawls at the speed of light though :o He also happily cruises around the furniture and pushes his walker around.

StarMeKitten · 15/05/2012 20:37

pinkandsparklytoo my DD is also a very fast crawler, and loves to climb, but just doesn't want to walk!

xkatyx · 15/05/2012 20:38

Dd refuses to touch her walker!! As soon as you put her to it she sais " up, up) which actually means down :) a d she will crawl away very fast!!

Don't worry it's fine as long as she's can bear weight on her legs, which she can if she's cruising/walking when you hold her hand.

whatcakeydid · 15/05/2012 20:46

Hi, try not to worry, like someone else says she is dong all the right things that proceed walking and, btw, so are you. The standing with the back to the wall is a good way to practise. Also, encourage her to cruise at walls as well as furniture, and around corners e.g the corner of the room - this helps improve standing balance. Fridge magnets are good entertainment for cruisers who are practising standing at an upright surface! Also, has she got a push along trolley, like the ones with bricks? They are good for encouraging independent walking.
BUT, like I said, don't worry, she is well within the normal range for walking.

Olivetti · 15/05/2012 20:56

I've been on loads of threads worrying about this - at 16 months, my DD could only just stand alone for a couple of seconds, and could only cruise. I couldn't imagine her ever walking.

She is 18 months tomorrow, and walking! She still looks a bit like the wobbly man Grin, but she can do it. She just mastered standing herself up from the floor at the weekend as well. LOADS can change in the space of a few weeks and months.

StarMeKitten · 15/05/2012 21:00

Congrats Olivetti you must be so pleased! Grin

It's so easy to worry isn't it but I guess they all just do it in their own time!

Olivetti · 15/05/2012 21:02

Thanks StarMeKitten. Yes, am very pleased. She does still crawl/knee-walk from time to time, especially when she first gets up, but she is walking more and more. I think she just has a slightly slower than average gross motor timetable, and hasn't read any of the baby milestone books. Grin

mindgone · 15/05/2012 23:09

My DS was 18 months and not walking, HV referred to a paediatrician, he had special boots (very sweet ones) for a couple of years or so. Btw, he started walking at 18.5 months, at my cousin's wedding, just as the bride and groom were having their first dance! He is 15 now, and has never had any physical issues, mind you, he has never been able to ride a bike (!), don't know if that's related, but not life threatening!

matana · 16/05/2012 08:04

My niece first walked at 17 months and is totally normal - very, very active in fact - at 3 yo. Your DD sounds perfectly fine to me, she's bearing weight and cruising etc so any day now she'll surprise you. Just continue to give her lots of encouragement and plenty of cheers and kisses whenever she stands alone, or tries to put one foot forward. We made a game of it with my niece and she was walking well literally overnight.

mumblechum1 · 16/05/2012 08:06

DS was 16 months before he started walking, but was perfectly happy to cruise round the furniture for months before then. He is now an athletic teenager who runs half marathons for fun! If your dd wasn't cruising I'd say get her checked out but I think she just needs a bit more confidence and then she'll be off.

AblativeAbsolute · 16/05/2012 08:38

Totally normal. Both my boys were 17 months (and they never did any cruising). DS1 would still rather not get off his bottom if he could help it Grin. DS2 runs everywhere, usually in the opposite direction to the one I want Hmm. Ignore the comments and don't sweat it - it will happen.

xkatyx · 16/05/2012 10:02

Thank you all.

She doesn't stand alone yet :(

But has got the crusing perfected :)

Meant to say, DS2 is only 20 months, so went from immobile to running in only three months Smile.

fryscream · 16/05/2012 13:37

19 month old DD who doesn't walk. She cruises, but no walking of her own yet. She shuffles on her bum at the speed of light. I am sure she will get there.
