3 week old- not pooped in two days and smelly farts!

As above really!

She is mostly bf (the odd bottle) and up until two days ago was having several normal bowel movements a day.

Now, nothing, and she is farting a lot- and boy they can clear a room...

She is peeing as usual.

Anyone have any experience of this? Is it cause for concern?

I do know bf babies can go for about 10days without a poop. Having said that ur mixed feeding, so I don't know much about that. I'd lay her on the change mat, and do some gentle cycle movements with her legs. That might get her going.

Flisspaps · 13/05/2012 16:06

Normal - BF babies can go days - up to a week or more in some cases - without pooing, yet it's equally normal for them to poo several times a day too. If she's weeing lots you know plenty of milk is getting in.

Octaviapink · 13/05/2012 17:55

I wouldn't have thought she was constipated, unless the formula is disagreeing with her - the smelly wind may be an indicator of that. BF poos have a very distinct smell unlike normal poo and IME their farts don't smell bad. Could you try BFing exclusively for a couple of days and seeing what happens?

My baby's record was about three weeks, and 10 days was normal up until solids.

BoboksAndCot · 13/05/2012 19:59

As above, breast fed babies don't tend to part with much, they get full use out of that milk! See how she is tomorrow, if you're still worried maybe a warm bath or a gentle tummy rub?

cleas · 13/05/2012 20:03

I had the same with DD. Went to GP once as was worried something wasn't right.
As long as baby isn't crying (for no other apparent reason) or showing any worrying symptoms then it's perfectly normal. DD could go a week without a poo then other days it would be a few in a day! She's 2.5 now though and I could set my clock by her 'movements' Grin

Alargeglassofred · 13/05/2012 20:12

My DS would go for a week or more without having a poo...then WHOOSH!! a huge explosion , usually out and about!! was EBF. don't think the feed makes any difference!!! Just think of the nappies you save!! Cloud and silver lining!!

Empusa · 13/05/2012 20:15

DS was the same at about that age, if you are worried then give her a little bit of cooled boiled water. We had almost instant results.

leguminous · 13/05/2012 20:27

My D (breastfed) went from very frequent poos to having one huge one every 3 days, and then back again a month or so later. I think that if she doesn't seem in any discomfort and she's mostly breastfed, she's probably OK as BF babies don't often get constipated. You could try a warm bath followed by lying her on her back and very gently cycling her legs, but mostly I would give it another few days before worrying about it.

easytiger12 · 13/05/2012 22:18

Give her some cooled boiled water to drink - just a couple of ounces. We had this problem with DS and Health Visitor said was quite common in formula fed babies in our area as such hard water. She recommended some water every day and it sorted out his constipation - also meant he got used to drinking water and now, as an 11mo, is happy to drink water - no need to give juice etc

Snowgirl1 · 14/05/2012 09:32

If you do decide to give your baby water be careful about the amount www.babycenter.com/408_when-can-my-baby-drink-water_1368488.bc

My BF baby went from having poos in every nappy to less frequent poos - I was told this was quite normal.

arthurfowlersallotment · 14/05/2012 09:43

Thanks everyone. She had not had any formula for over a week so I didn't think it was that. Anyway, I took your advice and done the cycling, then gave her a bath.

Shortly afterwards a look of intense concentration came on her face and she done a monster poo! I was so happy!

Thanks for advice- I didn't realise bf babies didn't poo that often..

Grin You never think you are going to be so happy to see a pooey nappy!

Longdistance · 15/05/2012 09:43

Just that bit of cycle motion can get their bowels moving. If you think about it, if you don't move much, you get constipated. Glad she did a nice poop for you. My dd2 used to fart like a trooper in the early days too. I swear she's never gonna get married Grin

TrippleBerryFairy · 15/05/2012 11:23

With DS I had a short period (he was 4-5 months) when he was doing an ENORMOUS poo every 3 weeks or so. Yes I was worried but he was ok, was breastfed so not sure why that was happening! And then on a lucky day I would lift his legs up and just keep putting clean nappies under him untill he's finished! He's nearing 3 now and absolutely fine:)

arthurfowlersallotment · 15/05/2012 16:33

heh heh- I know, I even ran to DP to show him!

My baby is BF exclusively and his bowel habits changed when he got to the three week mark. Until then he'd had two dirty nappies a day, now he has gone down to only two a week. And his farts stink! Trouble is that when the poo does happen it is a seriously bad nappy!
