Underwear soiling DS 12yo

Hi everybody,

I are having a problem with our middle son and his toilet hygiene. In short, he frequently (3 times a week or more) leaves "skid marks" in his underwear.

It has always been an issue to some extent, but may even be getting worse over the last few months, and I am running out of ideas of what to do to sort it out. In every other area of hygiene he is 100% fine.

I don't think it is medical, as he doesn't have constipation or the runs.

Short of going in with him and teaching him to wipe his bottom again, I am out of ideas and would appreciate advice from people who have had something similar.

Thanks

Teach him to do his own laundry! :)

Octaviapink · 13/05/2012 14:07

You could try some of those flushable wet wipes (Kandoo?) they market for toddlers? I would just be straight with him and tell him he's not doing a good enough job (if he's starting to get hairy then he may not realise he needs to be a little more thorough...)

agree with ocatavia. Also some possible medical things..

itchy bum causing scratching, so pants get worked into bum. Worms?
Any chance of leakage past an impacted stool?

DD had this last year. She's easy to talk to about stuff, so I told her that I had seen etc and said that maybe she should try wet wipes (flushable kind like previously mentioned) she didn't take kindly to me bringing it up tbh, and she was slightly embarrassed. But she's never had the problem again.

So defo worth having a chat with him. Just try not to embarrass him too much.

we use those moist wipes as the DC find it easier. Although I swear they eat the loo roll! Grin

Just mention it to your DS, he may not be aware.

I bet he has an itchy crack.
Worms, or washing powder ??
Or piles can make u itchy, bless him x

somethingscary · 15/05/2012 20:37

DS had this at a similar age but wouldn't discuss it. I treated the whole family for worms (didn't help) and I have no idea what was causing it. It sounds as though he was much worse than your DS ( to the point where you could smell it in his room). Getting a girlfriend cured him and now I only notice it very occasionally.

Hebiegebies · 15/05/2012 20:47

Agree it could be simple hygiene or worms/washing powder

But it could be overflow from constipation or other medical problem.

If simple solutions mentioned don't work after a month or so, do seek medical advice.

AngiBolen · 15/05/2012 20:51

Have you tried waving them at him and saying "look, you are not wiping your bum properly? Please do so in future!"

Thats what I would do, but I'm guessing I have a special parenting style.

cece · 15/05/2012 20:56

It might well be constipation and he may well have impaction. This does cause poo stains in underwear. It might be worth a trip to the doctor to get some movicol.

girlywhirly · 16/05/2012 08:49

Just a dirty bottom can cause itching. Then DS rubs the itch and hispants get marks on them. Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose and Boots all have own brand wet toilet wipes that are much cheaper than Andrex ones.

fuckbucket · 16/05/2012 08:53

The laundry is far less revolting now that I've got Lidl own brand moist toilet tissue in every loo.
