single or toddler-bed size duvet for new toddler bed??

Hi all. I've just bought a toddler bed for DS to be set up next week. I'm probably going to start him off in his sleeping bags (following some lovely advice last week thanks ladies), but think I'll try a quilt too, as the novelty may help with the transition!

So, should I get a single duvet (4.5 tog) so I can tuck it in at the side and the end so there's less chance of it falling off? Or get a proper toddler-bed sized one? DS2 can use it after him so a small one wouldn't be a waste of money.

TIA!

I found the single one way too big for our toddler bed. We had to fold it under almost in half at the bottom. The junior duvet fit much better. We got ours from dunelm mill with a pillow included.

Thanks mona that's what I was worried about. But does the fact that it's tucked in so much mean that it's effectively attached to the bed on two sides so it's unlikely to fall off? Or is it just reams of useless material??

Singles are a bit big but much easier to buy covers for, especially when they start dictating asking for characters such as Thomas or Bob the Builder on them.

Toddler duvets are easier to clean if they get puked on because there is a good chance it will fit into your own washing machine.

What bunbaker said.

I've got singles, I put them on sideways so lots to tuck under, still reaches the end of the bed and forms a giant sleeping bag effect.

Mine don't throw up but they wriggle a lot so this way I figure there is more chance of them finding some cover to cuddle with in the middle of the night so they don't wake me!

Hmmn, puke issues v not being able to find covers easily...

Buy a bigger washer!

The only decent covers for toddler beds I found are from Argos Shock. I'm upgrading ds to a single duvet next week as he is getting a single bed (need the toddler bed to be converted back to cot for dd2)

My friend swears by tucking a single duvet under the bed to stop her ds faling out. I'm going to try the same.

Not sure about the falling out issue as we had a bed guard. I found there was too much duvet and ds kept getting tangled up. By the time he wanted character duvet covers he was in a single so wasn't a problem.

Cheap IKEA singles - you can double them over for extra warmth, put any duvet cover on them that takes your fancy, get two of them in a standard wash, & you can't have too many as extra bedding for sleepover guests!

With both girls had single duvets. The end and one side were tucked under the mattress. It makes like a sleeping bag so they cant kick it off completely and its easier to find if they do want to cover them selves up again.

DD1 has recently moved into a single bed and as shes such a wriggler the duvet is always on the floor and she wakes moaning she's cold.
Ive taken to tucking a large blanket under the sides now too.

Single covers are easier to find, much more choice and alot cheaper too!

We found letting the girls choose their duvet cover really helped too. They chose Peppa and Night Garden.

At the suggestion of my DSiL, we got DD a toddler duvet and put it in a single bed duvet cover. Easy to wash, easy to find covers for, and easy to tuck the little bit of spare cover in tight at the sides so she stays warm all night.
[tips hat at knowledgable DSiL]

Never even considered a toddler bed because DS1 and DS2 both used a normal cot - straight into a double (at the time) and now it's singles (bunk beds).

lovechoc · 12/05/2012 15:56

We use double duvets on single beds though because it keeps them cosy in the winter time!
