Films with Knights or Princes?!

Not really parenting, but I'm sure someone will come up with something good!!

DS1 (2.6yo) has a bit of an obsession with knights, princes, dragon-slaying etc at the moment. We like to tuck up in bed while DS2 sleeps in the afternoon and watch a film so he has some "rest" time, but he's always after "a film about a prince". We've done the obvious Disney flicks, but can anyone suggest anything else for the sake of my sanity a bit of variety?

Thanks!

The Princess Bride!

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die! Love it.

CointreauVersial · 06/05/2012 17:25

I was going to suggest Stardust, which I adore, but 2 is probably a bit young. Maybe you can put DS1 to sleep as well and watch it yourselves!

A knights tale!

I've just written a story about a dragon. They are really nice, just misunderstood. :(

Twinkleinmyeye · 06/05/2012 17:29

OMG, two of my favourite films!! Grin Can't believe I hadn't considered those. Actually can't believe DH hasn't suggested The Princess Bride, given that it's one of his favourites too. (I might be outing him now...!) Think Stardust might be a little bit beyond DS at the moment but it makes my top 5.

I'm wondering if anyone is going to come up with some long-forgotten animated ones from off of the 80s...?

LadySybil, I agree, they just get bad press. We're Welsh, so we really should be discouraging dragon-slaying. Grin

Well in fairness, perhaps your DH considered The Princess Bride (one of my all-time faves as well) and discarded it on the grounds Prince Humperdink is a total arse. Grin

Sword in the Stone? I love A Knight's Tale as well, not sure if the jousting scenes might be a bit much (no gore that I can recall) - swearing? What about Shrek?

Of course, what you really need on the knight/chevalier front is Dogtanien and the Three Muskehounds, from the 80s Beeb (think Philip Schofield in the broom cupboard) - surely one of the longest-running cartoons of all time.

Thumbwitch · 06/05/2012 17:36

Well, for dragons without princes etc. I would recommend Ivor the Engine - DS had the DVD of both series and was watching it from about the age of 1 Blush - his first and highly successful exposure to dragons!

Mike the Knight is a current children's cartoon - doubt they've got to DVD status yet though - but it has dragons, knights, princey things...

I was going to say a Knight's Tale as well but no dragons in that. :(

How to Train Your Dragon doesn't have any princes but is bloody fantastic for dragons! DS has had it since he was 3 and it is a firm favourite - we even took him to see the arena floor show (by the people who made Walking with Dinosaurs) this April (he's 4 1/4 now) and he was awestruck!

Thumbwitch · 06/05/2012 17:37

Oh Shrek, yes!! Definitely a good one. DS loves all of them (yes we are that sad, we have the full set)

Janoschi · 06/05/2012 17:37

Sword in the Stone by Disney?
The Magic Sword (aka The Quest For Camelot)

Thumbwitch · 06/05/2012 17:38

Mike the Knight DVD - just shows what I know, eh.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 06/05/2012 17:38

My book has a dragon called Elvis, a King and an army. Grin

LadySybilDeChocolate · 06/05/2012 17:39

Shrek is fab! It has a lovely dragon who marries the donkey. What else do you need from a movie? Grin

Muminspace · 06/05/2012 17:39

In case you were considering it, Game of Thrones mixes knights, princes and dragons with zombies, doggy style, and incest, so might not be what you are after. Eragon, on the other hand ...

m.imdb.com/title/tt0449010/

Janoschi · 06/05/2012 17:40

Dragonslayer isn't bad....
Tangled?

DerbysKangaskhan · 06/05/2012 17:45

It's hard for that age (all the prince movies I can think of are a bit old for him). I think Jane and the Dragon might work well for him though. Not a movie but you can watch multiple episodes on DVD.

Janoschi · 06/05/2012 18:19

Big Knights always makes me smile....

AWomanCalledHorse · 06/05/2012 18:35

Would the Princess & the Goblin be too scary for him?
Black Cauldron (again, might be scary?), tv show King Arthur's Disaters, Dungeons & dragons cartoon?

The Clangers have a dragon!!

Takver · 06/05/2012 18:54

Short, but good age wise - the episode of Mr Ben where he turns into a knight.

(And he might like all the others even if there aren't any knights!)

Twinkleinmyeye · 06/05/2012 19:15

these are great, keep them coming!! especially if anyone has more in the vein of The Magic Sword.

Yep, we've exhausted Shrek, The Sword in the Stone and Mike the Knight. I honestly can't keep up with which knightly persona is going to be sitting at my breakfast table. DH even fashioned a knight helmet from a box this week. Don't think "Sir Carlsberg d'Export" is really appropriate though.

I loved Ivor the Engine as a child. Another 70's/80's throwback is The Clangers, with the Soup dragon.

Also, Petes Dragon

snax84 · 06/05/2012 19:26

Barbies rupenzal film has princess, prince & dragons

JeanBodel · 06/05/2012 19:39

Willow. Madmartigan is quite a cool knight (and we all would).
