Help with cloth nappies - NAPPY RASH!

Hi all,

I'm late in the game to cloth nappies, and just started using them with my 23-month-old. He didn't get nappy rash at all frequently with disposables, but in the 3-4 days I've been using cloth a nasty and persistent rash has appeared.

What am I doing wrong?

Daytime, I'm using Flip organic inserts in various PUL covers (mostly bought in the states, brands like Blueberry and Capri), with fleece liners to wick moisture away and flushable liners to catch the solids.

Nighttime, he's in Tots Bots Bamboozle Stretch with hemp doubler, again with a fleece liner and flushable liner, again in a PUL cover.

At each change I was using the Weleda Calendula ointment, as this is what I used with disposables and it seemed to prevent rash.

In total I'm changing him 4-5 times a day.

Should I be changing him more? Do I need more breathable covers? Should I be using a different nappy cream?

I've reverted to disposables until his rash clears but I really want to make cloth work for us! Thanks in advance for any ideas.

i dont think you need a fleece liner and a paper liner

i would try with just a fleece liner

could there be a build up of detergent thats irritiating the skin? I always rinse the nappies, then wash, then do another rinse
the nappies i use are either fleece (use onlined) or bamboo / cotton that i line with a fleece liner

i use mothereasse airflow wraps, and sudocream as a barrier and 8m DD has never had nappy rash (been in cloth since 1 day old)

Newbie too, started using cloth nappies less than 2 months ago. Found that DS2 had bad rashes initially too, so I switched to fleece liners, without the disposable, read on a website, totsbots or something that you're only supposed to use either or. Agree with nannyl, I started using less detergent, more rinses (a quick rinse after a full wash), and nappy rash went. THink I also read that some babies are sensitive to bamboo - but it doesn't sound like your is DS coming into contact with bamboo

I use a lot of motherease products(wraps + wizard) and they seem pretty good. Hope it works for you too.

Were they both preloved? Have you been using too much detergent ? Fabric conditioner (that's a no no)

If any of above you need to do a strip wash.

Soak in vinegar overnight and then wash and rinse rinse rinse!

Ps do not put pul covers in vinegar!

if they're new, new, then you need to wash them at least 3 times.
and what about your detergent?
maybe it doesn't agree with his bum area - try a non-bio.

yo ucould also try running them through the machine without powder at all - a hot wash (at least 60degrees)

it also might be worth changing him more regularly - going back to water for washing his bum?
