i have recently found out that I am pregnant with number 2 baby :), my 10month DS is still Breastfeeding.. Will this be a problem as I planned on BFing until my DS is at least a year old?

Plus for the future, any handy hints on how to wean off the breast, he still likes to have milk before his sleeps and i am unable to express? Will he naturally stop this or is there something I should be preparing him for and how? Preferably without using formula...

no it shouldnt be a problem unless you have a high risk pregnancy ie previous early labour and then they may encourage you to wean (there is evidence both ways for this i 'think')

but i bfed throughout two pregnancies and then tandem fed toddler and baby, it was fine.

re weaning he may well do it himself as he gets older, he may not! you could just offer regular milk in a cup once he has turned one if thats what you want to do :)

congratulations on your pregnancy :)

No problem breastfeeding while you are pregnant - carry on if you like!

If you want to wean him off the breast but do not want to use formula, you should continue until he is at least a year (advised to use breastmilk or formula, not cows milk until 12 months).

Hard to say if he will stop naturally before #2 is born. Some do, others take a bit of persuasion! I BF my DS1 until he was 13m, then decided I wanted to stop as I was pregnant with DD. So the decision was mine rather than DS1's, but it was much easier than I was expecting - he took to the new system of story rather than BF with no problems.

Congratulations! DS was 15 months and still bf when I became pregnant with DD. he self weaned at 19 months, I was happy still feeding him although it became more painful as time went along. I never offered but never refused a feed and eventually he stopped asking. I half expected him to start asking again when DD was born and was prepared to tandem feed but he's never asked.

Hi OP I'm in a similar situation to you. My DD was 10 months when I first became pregnant (now 17 months) and I've breastfed her with no problems right up until a few days ago. The reason I decided to wean her was purely because being pregnant and feeding made my boobs ache too much to carry on. As she was over a year I was able to gradually cut back on her breastfeeds with a cup of warm cows milk instead and I'm happy to say its been remarkably easy.

Have you tried reading La Leche League's website? They have some useful pages on weaning or tandem feeding if you choose to continue breastfeeding you toddler with your newborn.

Thanks all :) Some very encouraging messages and very helpful too.

Betty, I will have a look at that website.

All very exciting :)

Thanks

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Smile

There is a La Leche League book called Adventures in Tandem Nursing by Hilary Fowler, which may be worth a read.

I bfed while pregnant and it wasn't a problem - though make sure you're taking a very good vitamin supplement as otherwise you've got two other people getting dibs on nutrients before you!

Thanks GB I am reading the Le leche website, getting the theory ready for the practice so to speak [hmmm]

Octa: taking everything under the sun, so hopefully got that covered LOL... :)

Am struggling with sleep deficit, but hopefully that will improve in time....
