Can you still use baby sleeping bags once they're in a big bed?

I started this thread here the other day and got some good advice, but noone mentioned bedding.

We've accepted that DS needs a big bed now and will probably order one this week (he's in his cot with the side at the lowest setting now).

He's still in his Grobabgs, and I'm concerned about him kicking off a duvet and getting cold so waking more in the night. At the moment he's climbing out with his bag on and can run around the house in it Grin, but is it a bit odd to use one once he's in a bed?

What's normal??!

The gro bag ones go up to 36 months :) but I think a duvet is usually heavy enough to not be kicked off. I guess safety would worry me with the legs not able to be used as effectively and allowing proper safe climb up onto and off the bed. :)

I've got the big grobags so they'll fit for a while yet. I see what you mean re: climbing, though at the moment his bag does't seem to stop him climbing in and out of his cot Grin

Trying to remember here... I think I kept using the grobags for a while after moving out of cots, but we had a space between cots and proper beds involving mattresses on the floor, as didn't want ddtwins falling out of bed.

:o nothing stops a determined climber ! If your using a duvet though it might get a bit hot with both :)

Wrigglebum · 29/04/2012 19:46

We used a fleecy babygro with a thin duvet, that way DS was plenty warm enough if he kicked the duvet off but not too hot underneath it. He soon learnt to pull the duvet up himself and I wasn't worried about him falling over if he got out of bed! Of course finding one at this time of year would be impossible but vest, pyjamas and socks should be warm enough.

mamababa · 29/04/2012 20:06

We did what wriggebum said although finding the fleecy all in one babygrow's is tricky at thus time. We bought a single duvet and cover and tucked in the bulk under the cot bed mattress so it doesnt fall off like a cotbed duvet maybe would. They soon get used to pulling the duvet over themselves Smile

My DD1 stayed in her grobag for about 8 months after she was into a proper bed - she really hated the duvet for some bizarre reason and we didn't much want to fight with her about it. We only stopped using the grobag when she came out of night nappies and needed to be able to use the potty if necessary at night. Her bed was low to the ground so she was able to hop in and out and sack race around the room etc. I think that the main thing to be aware of is safety, so for example you need to be sure that there is a stair gate at the top of the stairs as they can easily trip and fall if hopping around in a sleeping bag.

Both my girls kept their sleeping bags after moving into a big bed. Dd1 just for a couple of months while she got used to the bed but dd2 was in a big bed in a sleeping bag for well over a year (she was only 7 months when we moved her into the bed though).

My 4 year old still sleeps in his grobag (they go up to 6 years) in the winter, and loves just getting up and transferring himself to the sofa in his bag (a future life of laziness I predict!). He has a duvet as well and can just kick it off if the combo is too hot.

igggi · 29/04/2012 20:32

Oh and he can unzip it himself if he needs the loo.

AngelDog · 30/04/2012 09:16

DS has been in a big bed since 4 months (we sort of co-sleep) and still wears a sleeping bag at 2.3 y.o. You can get some designed for 3-6 years if you look online.

seabuckthorn · 30/04/2012 11:31

JoJoMamanbebe do a sleeping bag with legs if that makes sense?
Sleep snugglers I think they are called. The Gro Company do similar and also do zipped duvet covers so they can't fall off.

brettgirl2 · 30/04/2012 17:13

I put my 3 year old back in her 18-36 month gro bag last week. I was thoroughly sick of replacing her covers twice nightly. She was a bit Hmm that's the baby's but we have slept better since!

GobblersKnob · 30/04/2012 17:17

The Grobag ones actually go up to age 10Grin

Ds slept in one until he was 5.5 so was in a big bed, some children find them very comforting.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 30/04/2012 17:21

The ones with legs are great, but they seem to be small sizing, so if you go with those, go for a much bigger size than you need :)

BsshBossh · 30/04/2012 21:07

We use a bigger duvet than the bed and tuck it in both sides and at the bottom. DD can get out but usually one or more sides are still tucked in by morning so never falls off.

Thanks ladies this is great. I don't feel so odd now for considering keeping him in a sleeping bag when we move him into a bed. Brett that is exactly what I can see happening to us, and I'm up often enough with DS2 to add that issue into the mix! Smile
