Why do children go wild at bedtime?

I've just read an article by \link{http://www.naomialdort.com/this woman} which has cast light on the reasons why my kids go wild and run around at bedtime. It can be quite frustrating and confusing (especially for dh who would prefer them to do as he says).

In her article in The Mother Magazine this woman explains that kids know how to generate a good night's sleep by arriving in bed free of excess energy or anxiety so the wild period before bed serves the purpose of discharging the days stresses.

This makes perfect sense to me.

Sadly she loses me after this by saying parents (or at least, mothers) might consider going to bed with their children.

I often let the kids have a wild half hour upstairs after their baths and find bedtime is much easier and smoother if they've done this. Now I know why.

I tickle my son until he can hardly stand up before bed, this usually means I get a good night's sleep. I think the laughter relaxes him.

Wow that makes loads of sense - thanks for that.

I thought it was some sort of wine-makers conspiracy myself - maybe Hardys and Wolf Blass etc. all got together and put something in the water. Kids go crazy at bedtime = Mum reaches for corkscrew at 7.30 = improved sales.

DH is letting them go wild for a bit tonight in the interests of a smoother bed time.

I dunno, but it's bedtime and my 2.6 year old is dancing wildly round the room w/a tambourine right now.

SorenLorensen · 11/02/2006 19:55

My ds2 just threw a towel, a sock and a toy mop in the bath while shrieking wildly. Wine, anyone? I'm opening a bottle...

Spidermama · 11/02/2006 19:56

Cheers. I'm sipping pink Cava (classy eh? while dh does the bedtime shift.

How very Valentine-y I'm opening a bottle of M&S Cabernet Shiraz called 'Lost Sheep' - I liked the name.

So that explains everything! ds is 16 months and after every evening meal its an automatic wild time.

We at first put it down to the calories going in.

But then he is fast asleep by 6.30pm

Enjoy your wine you lot,im off the alcohol right now

SorenLorensen · 11/02/2006 20:00

Dh has bathed them, I have to go and read Biggles to ds1 now. It is so dreary but he is utterly fascinated by the Second World War atm.

Spidermama · 11/02/2006 20:05

I find a glass of wine helps with storytime.

Good for you being off the wine notasheep. I'm only having it on Fridays and Saturdays now. That's the plan at least.

Way hey! Thank Goodness it's Saturday. (hic!)

I aksed dd1 (4.4) why she went loopy at bedtime and she said it was because she liked it. Stories, songs....my full attention probably!
