Should we go for an Asperger's diagnosis?

My son's school are suggesting we have him officially assessed for Asperger's. He over-focuses, misjudges social situations ? not harming himself or others, but standing out for getting things wrong. If he is on the spectrum he's probably towards the mild end of it. But he's getting unsympathetic treatment at school on account of his oddities - from some kids, bullying/teasing, and some adults also, who don't know him and jump to conclusions about the way he talks and acts. Being diagnosed as Asperger's could help him, we think. My question is, what are the down-sides? Does anyone have any experience of negative outcomes? Does the label become part of his medical history, and have to be disclosed to potential employers, etc.? What might it bar him from in the future?

Been nothing but positive for us.. I'd say go for it.

OP - I would suggest posting this on the Special Needs Children Board.

Personally I would say the dx was essential in order to get my child support in school.

Talk to the people on the SN Board here. Many many experts with lots of experience.

If he is on the spectrum then a diagnosis is essential to get him the support he will need throughout school and onwards.

My son was diagnosed with ASD and I have no regrets at all.

Yes I agree, come over to special needs board Smile

Thanks for these. Encouraging! And for directing us to the Special Needs board. (First post on mumsnet - sorry to be dim.)

I'd definitely advise getting a dx. I've just been dx'd at 26 and wish it had been picked up in school as the bullying I suffered has caused depression and PTSD also I was misjudged by teachers and adults. It would also mean he counted under the disability discrimination act when it camre to finding a job which can help get to interview.

We're just at the start of the process with my DS aged 6 so if you want a support buddy from the process you can always pm me

My son is 27, was officially diagnosed at 11, but getting DLA from the age of 6. Nothing negative to say about the diagnosis, but he was relieved to be told he has Aspergers about the age of 12. He doesn't tell his employers unless it is relevant to the job he is doing.
