So...chickenpox...

Was at soft play today and a couple of kids there had chicken pox (sisters).

Just realised I wouldn't have the foggiest idea what to do if DS got them.

He's 13 months, do I take him to the doctor, or just get a cream or something? How long is the onset time?

Probably sounds a bit thick. He did come into contact with the little girls, so could get it, but I know he might not.

Thanks! :)

Active chicken pox at soft play????? I'd be bloody furious!!!! AngryAngryAngry No help for you I'm afraid as we haven't had it here yet.

Two weeks wait for you now.

I didn't take DD to the doctors when she had chickenpox but i had a new born DS to cope with at the time.

I just dabbed calamine lotion on the spots to stop her itching. She was really good not to scratch them unlike her best friend who has a terrible scar from one of her spots.

Well I'm assuming chickenpox, the little girl had loads of red spotty blotches all over. I should of asked really but it really did look like what I would imagine chickenpox to look like.

I would of thought it was strange if I hadn't read about it happening so much on MN Grin

Get done calomile lotion
If he does get chicken pox, it may start with generally unwell, vomiting and fever
The spots will come thru a few days later
Of this happens, a cool bath may help
At this point don't burst onto tears when you see spots everywhere Blush
My girls were really poorly when they got it
I hope you ds doesnt pick it up

Thank you :)

How old was your DD?

Was saying to SIL that 13 months will probably be a really 'annoying' age to get them as he's not going to know whats going on and probably just be really miserable.

Hopefully he won't get them. I'm very blase about it atm. Will probably change if he does get them!

Annpan88 my DD was 3 years old when she had it and apart from the spots wasn't ill at all. No fever or vomiting. The spots came really quickly. One or two behind her ear when she got up and by bedtime she was covered. They were pretty quick to clear up too. Maybe because she's always been very healthy (almost never gets colds)?

But for good measure she had head lice too. It took me a while to realise (in that newborn sleep deprivation period) that she wasn't just scratching her head because of the pox. I blame the Christmas party at nursery for the chicken pox and nits!!!

We don't know whether DS had it at the time (he certainly had no spots) but he hasn't had it since (now 7) and at one point there were 24 cases in his nursery class!

So maybe you'll be lucky and your DS won't get it just yet.

Thanks Beanbagz hopefully not! Will just have to wait and see I guess!

I am stuck at home with DS (2.8) at the moment as he has chickenpox. I have totally quarantined him, cancelling my birthday day out and all his other social events after reading another thread displaying much rage aimed at parents who don't keep their poxy kids in. He started coming out in spots exactly 2 weeks after I did (which coincidentally was 2 weeks after we'd been to a party at the soft play place Hmm.
He's been quite poorly - high temperature, general listlessness, upset tum and sore throat.

I'd stock up on bicarb as a bath in it really helps the itching. DP bought some very expensive anti-itch foam, but DS squeals when I put it on so sticking with calamine cream.
