Just wanted to give anyone that is interested a heads up that Coursera www.coursera.org/ are offering free university level classes from some of the top US universities. I have already taken one class and the quality is so much better than the bricks and mortar classes at my university.

The only thing is that there is no formal qualification at the end other than a certificate saying you took part. Hope it helps someone out there.

Has anyone started introduction to finance?

chilled7up · 27/07/2012 12:03

Do you get a certificate with the open university courses?

Thanks for posting the link! Just signed up to take the Greek and Roman mythology course.

Overthehurdles I would guess that the lectures will be posted online and we can watch them anytime, but that there will be a deadline if coursework is set.

ooops i signed up to coursera model making starting in september.
wasent that many courses to sign up for within 3months

its actaully economics not making models.
but realised need to brush up my algebra.

wondering if worth doing the suggested reading list?

on the certificates do you get graded or just i completed the course?
says 2-8hours a week over 10weeks.

fancy trying some of ou courses.
anyone doe any
how do they work?
can you start anytime and also get certificate.
what does intermediate level mean?

can it accrue any ou points?

guess could be good way getting to grips with ou before doing a course that costs money.

Hi mam, I'm doing introduction to finance and it's quite full on. We get recommended reading and every week there is about 2 hours of video lectures that can be watched anytime. At the end of each week there's an assignment, with a pass mark if 70%. To get a certificate we must pass 5 out of 9 assignments plus the final exam.

On this particular course there's no grading. It's pass or fail to get a certificate.

I believe that's it's not the same for all courses. The teaching and assessment vary from course to course.

I'm doing the second week on introduction to finance. I have no idea if it can be started anytime. I started on the launch date.

I'm very much enjoying it, it's hard work but very interesting and the lecturer is brilliant.

I hope this helps.

Mam. I've just realised that I missed a couple of you're questions.

I don't know what intermediate means on modelling as it will be different for all courses. I would advice you to read the pre -requisites.

I have no idea if it would count towards OU points, contact them and ask. Even if it doesn't it I'll look good on your CV as it shows your willingness to go the extra mile and learn new skills.

Your not you're Blush I was typing quickly on my phone on my way out

Chilled 7up

weird you should mention that one.

I was itching to start a coursera course and the economics module does not start until sept.

So yesterday I signed up for inuroduction to finance.

thinking would be ok as did finace modules in my business degree.

only signing up a day b4 test did some serious cramming.

blimey its tough isnt it.

I like the teacher guy.

but the assignments were so complicated.

I read it several times.
i spent about 2half hours doing mine.

1st attempt got 40%
2nd attempt 60%

I need 70

hoping now on proper week will have time to take it all in and hopefully do better on week 2.

I have amazed myself by managing to do some questions as tried and tried to get grade c at gcse in maths and failed yet could run a cashoffice with my eyes closed.

me and algebra dont mix.

was a bit disheartened but will plod on with it as love the coursera format just i chose a solid course.

doesnt seem to be many uk people

Theres a few teenagers too some as young as 13.

maybe we should start uk study group.

im wondering what comparative level it would be in uk?

a level/access or hnd/degree.

heres hoping pass assignment 2.

chilled7up · 31/07/2012 09:56

Mam

That's brilliant. There is a london group, but not a UK one as far as I know. The London group will be meeting up and although I'm in London the times are not convenient for me.

It's a good idea to start an UK group as I also have no idea what level this course would compare to here.

I did pass the first assignment but found it quite difficult. I thought I grasped it all from the videos, but the questions on the assignment were much harder.

It would be great if we can keep in touch and support each other on this course Smile

mam29 · 31/07/2012 10:46

Hi

yes noticed london one.

there is a uk one.

go discussions then study groups

theres many pages and uk near the end.

get impression not many uk doing it.

loads indian and american study groups.

those who are inn uk spread out.

hoping i do better this week

challange my crumbling mummy mind.

i get the videos and theory just the assignment was much harder and dident resemble the videos.the questions were high level maths for me showed hubby whos better with numbers was stumped at some of the questions.

I be super proud if manage to pass it.

did finace as part of business degree but this seems harder.

chilled7up · 02/08/2012 21:22

Hi mam, how are you finding this week? I still haven't tried the assignment, but I'm finding the lessons quite complicated. It's good to have an extended deadline to submit the assignment.
