After hearing about probiotics about 6 months ago i now give my son a yakult to drink every day. Someone just questioned whether that was o.k for a 4 yr old child, i had never considered it might not be! Can anyone advise?

Yes, it's absolutely fine.

SenoraPostrophe · 28/11/2003 20:42

huh? it's just live yoghurt!

They have probiotics in lots of baby milks nowadays too so must be OK.

When I read the ingredients in a Yakult I was surprised by the amount of artificial muck included in it, especially as its promoted as "healthy". You can buy probiotics separately and add them to other food without buying this overpriced junk (IMHO of course!)

it's fine- but agree with davros- buy some probiotic and chuck it in a normal yoghurt. Mind you I drink yakult- it's better than sunnyd and crap like that!

Would i go to a health shop for probiotics then, you must think i'm thick senorapostrophe! He won't eat probiotic yoghurts.

if nestle do it (baby milk) then it must be good for you (ahem)
never heard anything to the contrary anyhow but have heard that the yakult etc drinks are a bit of a con and all the probiotics get destroyed before they get to your gut anyhow - tablets from health food shops come in capsules that are designed to survive a bit longer

SenoraPostrophe · 29/11/2003 13:28

sorry linzoid, didn't mean to imply you are in any way not as bright as you could be!

My comment was partly in response to your friend's question, and partly in response to my feeling that the way Yakult is marketed/priced is a bit of a con (given that most healthy people don't need to "top up" their bacteria). Perhaps I should say these things rather than assume everyone else knows what I am thinking!

I would guess a health food shop for probiotics though, yes.

You can order probiotics by mail order from The Nutricentre, part of the Hale Clinic. Can't remember the contact info but google it and you'll find the website and phone number. Its worth ringing the first time as the people there really know their stuff.

it's o.k senorapostrophe, wasn't really upset....(sobs into cup of tea)I'm a bit disapointed that yakult is not all it's cracked up to be though. My ds has an immune problem and theres me thinking i was doing him the world of good giving him the yakult. Ah well we can but try.

I actually think Yakult is much better than the tablet form - and the bacteria live on sugar so don't think the sugar is a 'con' - it's what makes them effective, I think.
