What punishment do you dish out for backchat/cheek?

Have had an awful week with (not so) Dd (age 6) She has been talking back at me iykwim - telling me to be quiet when I am telling her off, sticking her fingers in her ears and saying I'm not listening etc etc.

Anyway I have been getting very with her (in my day my mother wouldn't have stood for that kind of cheek etc etc)

What do you think is best way of dealing with this type of behaviour?

Sending to bed early.

With holding favourite toy.

With holding treats, eg chocolate.

Anything like that.

she just never seems 'bovvererd' about stuff being withheld, think she gets more of a kick out of getting a rise from me.

(negative attention is better than none in her opinion, I guess)

It is hard if they have nothing they really value. For my boys, it is their gameboys and I can discipline them very easily by removing them for indefinite periods!

It has always been hard to discipline her...

I know the answer is seek out the positive rather than the negative but when you are in a downward spiral it's very difficult to look up!

Hi unicorn. Know how you feel! The only thing that works for me is deathly calm repetition of what I expect them to do (very tedious). Reasoning doesn't work - they're too cross. And issuing ultimatums/do this or else type commands seems just to give them something else to challenge. Naughty step/time out gives them time to hatch horrible thoughts of revenge!
If they really push it, I do this thing I read about in some American parenting book: 'You can do xx or not - it's up to you. But if you choose not to do it, you don't get to do yy. What's your decision?' Sounds weird but it often works...

God, just re-read my post, unicorn, and realise what a pompous old know-it-all I sound! sorry - definitely do NOT know it all. find the backchat thing a real nightmare...

unicorn you have to be firm otherwise it will carry on
imagine this when she is a teenager????
I would send her to bed tbh everytime she backchats
your dd will soon get the msg that it wont be tolerated.
