Household jobs for pocket money

DD is nearly 7 and we want to start giving her pocket money however I think she should do some things to earn it. My first thought is for her to make her bed and put her PJs under her pillow. Perhaps feeding the cat. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I gave my DDs my most hated job - putting away their laundry. Plus keeping their rooms tidy. Admittedly, I tend to only iron for 2 mins in a morning the clothes we are going to wear, so it doesn't matter too much if it isn't put away perfectly smoothly.

Water the plants?
Cleaning shoes?
Dusting?

I don't link pocket money with house hold jobs as I work on the basis that if they live in the house they should contribute to it

mine are 8&10 and they....
put their own washing in the wash and put it away when it's clean
load their own things into the dishwasher and take it in turns to empty it
hoover the stairs and landing
clean the bathroom (but not the toilet)
feed the pets
help with cooking

-and yes I am a task master!
these are their expected jobs but they do earn for extras ie washing/hoovering the car

workshy - do you give pocket money as well? Perhaps I will give her some and then have a list of additional tasks for her to earn extra.

DS gets basic pocket money and can earn extra with gardening tasks.

bizzey · 17/04/2012 20:26

HE hE Mine get money pocket money and extra money for other chores but......at the moment we are saving money for spending £ in spain in August.. so any money earnt goes into our EURO pot...GrinWink

ps 3ds's 10/9/7 yrs first BIG proper holidayWink

workshy · 17/04/2012 20:49

yes they get pocket money as well but I don't relate it to their normal jobs, to me it's all about living in and contributing to a family

plus if you use lack of pocket money as a threat they will either say they aren't bothered or will have some birthday money tucked away somewhere -it never worked on us when we were kids so I haven't started it with my 2 DCs

Good point workshy....

I'm just starting the whole pocket money thing with my ds 8, he has been given the daily tasks if making sure his room is tidy, emptying the dishwasher and putting his own washing away and emptying out the packed lunch boxes his and his younger brothers.

How much is the going rate at the moment?

Was coming onto the thread to say exactly what Workshy says - that's what my parents did with us.

DS is nearly 8 and gets £2 a week pocket money, his to fritter away on sweets, comics etc. as he chooses, so long as he has behaved during the week. His jobs around the house, which are not really linked to pocket money, include (but are not limited to!)
-cleaning his school shoes
-changing his bed
-emptying his lunchbox
-feeding the cat
-occasional washing/drying up

On top of this he is expected to do the day to day stuff like putting laundry in the bin and making his bed, reading back I sound really harsh!

If he wants something particular like a new DS game we normally agree to go halves with him and he can earn extra money by washing the car etc.

clam · 18/04/2012 21:13

Agree with those who say household jobs are part and parcel of living in the house, so no pay for that. Extras, yes. Although the last time I let my two loose on my car they made a right pig's ear of it. Never again.

We have just got DSD aged 10 living with us she has been taught nothing by the BM

Can you please suggest some chores to introduce?

Thanks

worldgonecrazy · 19/04/2012 15:55

DD is only two so we're not there yet, but we're agreed that everyday household tasks are part of being a family and will not be paid for. Over and above, such as washing the car or helping GPs in the garden will earn extra money.

We have already started DD on sweeping the floors and washing up. She helps GM with the dusting.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 19/04/2012 16:04

DD is 9 and receives £10 a month plus I get her a magazine and some sweeties so about £13 a month all in.
She has to:
Keep her room tidy
Put dirty laundry in the laundry bin and put clean laundry away tidily
Keep the bathroom tidy and not leave wet towels anywhere but on the towel rail
Feed her fish and the fish in the lounge and the dog every morning
Have a good attitude and do her homework without fuss
Put her dirty crockery etc in the dishwasher and help lay/clear the table for family mealtimes

She can earn more by offering to be particularly helpful - dusting, vacuuming, bringing a load of washing down or emptying the dryer etc.

Smurfy1 · 19/04/2012 16:13

Thanks we will start off with the easy ones like DSD making her bed, tiding her room, putting away her washing, dishes in the sink and setting the table etc

better start giving her pocket money LOL
