Any advice on stopping a newborn crying?

We've changed him, fed him, burped him, cuddled him.. nothing is stopping the screaming! He looks exhausted and it's heartbreaking, he's only 2 weeks old and we've got no idea what to do.

One thing I read on a thread recently about 'things they don't tell you before you have a baby' is that baby may need to be held for a bit by the person who doesn't smell of milk!

Even if the baby is well fed, the smell of milk may make them think they are hungry & so a non-milky person may be able to calm them better.

Am going to be putting this into action soon too, so I do hope it works!

The three 's's - swaddling, shushing and swaying.

Ds2 had colic and liked to be held in the 'tiger in a tree' position - basically draped over my forearm, legs and arms dangling either side, bum to the crook of my elbow and head in my hand. Lifting him up and down a few times seemed to settle him quite well.

Mostly though both of mine really calmed down with skin to skin contact.

Good luck - this too shall pass! x

We tried swaddling, which achieved nothing, he just wriggled twice as hard till we unwrapped him.

He has finally calmed down now though, think he's worn out.

Thankyou for all the advice, shall save it all somewhere for when he starts screaming again!

hello a bit late with this and haven't read full thread but my ds started screaming constantly at about a week or 2 would go n for hours no matter what we did. Finally came to the conclusion that he was over tired so took him up to the bedroom made it dark and quiet and rocked him for an hour and a half until he went to sleep was a nightmare the first few days but he started to realise that upstairs ment sleep so got easier after maybe 3 or 4 days he was getting enough sleep at night so got better. He is 10 weeks now and still gets over tired very easily and doesn't show much signs of being tired until he's shattered but have learned at the first sign of it to rock him and keep it quiet and calm he still screams but only for 5 mins then he's out.
