Whining- survival reason?

OK, so this is a bit of a ridiculous question.

After listening to almost constant whining from my 4yo all afternoon, despite my best efforts to entertain him I might add! I was wondering if there's some kind of survival reason for it? People talk about babies crying to ensure they aren't ever separated from their parents and eaten by a sabre toothed tiger. Is this the case with whining?

Pretty much all children I have come across do it to some extent. Is it an inbuilt behaviour, maybe to force parents to become irritated and force their offspring to become more independent (or the other way around)? Or is it just a symptom of today's society (instant gratification and more toys/entertainment than they can cope with)?

What does everyone think?

I don't know but when my 5yr old has a tired/whiney day he is more likely to end up being forcefed to the nearest sabre tooth tiger!

No idea but I'd like to know. My DD is 19 months and has just started whining. I tell her off for it and I hardly tell her off at all (she's normally very good). It drives me nuts so much more than other behaviours!
