Buying reusables in bulk - sales / discount tips?

Naisy · 13/04/2012 13:00

I've tried price comparison sites to try and compare nappy prices with no real success.

I'm hoping to buy a bulk purchase of Bum Genius V3 but naturally want to spend as little as possible - anyone got any tips on securing the best price or where to look?

And, on number, this is my first so I'm not very confident on quality - would 20 be enough?

Most nappy sellers do packs which work out cheaper than buying the nappies individually.
20-25 should be enough of a one-sized nappy to last you comfortably without being worried about drying times or washing daily

Are you certain you want BG? as I don't like them/don't find them absorbent enough
I would recommend gettinga few different ones to see which shape/style of nappy suits your DC best - does your coucil offer a cashback/incentive scheme - they may also offer a trial bucket, or a local retailer might lend you some samples - have you been on teamlollipoop.co.uk as they have advisors around the country who can demonstrate different nappies and many offer trial kits too. I think fillyourpants does something similar

I'd go second hand.
There's a bunch of websites like clothnappytree, usednappies.co.uk, etc
You aren't allowed to sell used nappies or wraps on Ebay but people do sometimes, just referring to them as 'washed'. Tots Bots are good easy nappies but need wraps (I used my £40 council voucher for new wraps for dc2)

Bumgenius were crap on my stocky son but great on skinny nephew, and so far are good on my standard-proportioned dd (she's only 9 weeks so may change shape!)

I wash when I get 20 at a time which is 2 buckets, and with a few clothes and sheets etc is a full load, so every couple days, and then they take a day to dry, so I use all the nappies I have which must be 30 or so. But my favourites get used all the time. When dd wriggles too much for two-piece nappies to be easy then I'll look on the 2nd-hand sites for some more stuffables and all-in-ones - it's the easiest way to try different brands and see what suits, and owning lots of nappies makes using washables so much easier!

Mothercare has Bumgenius on 3 for 2 offer at the moment, v4 i think www.mothercare.com/nappy-changing-bathing-changing/b/42854041?ie=UTF8&sort=salesrank&forceNoKeyword=false&rh=n%3A42854041%2Cn%3A44532031%2Cn%3A76484031%2Cp_4%3ABum&size=12&pf_rd_r=1DCCXZ1P3QPRYSVFQHRX&pf_rd_m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=42854041&pf_rd_p=231558267&pf_rd_s=related-tab-3-3#ie=UTF8&sort=salesrank&page=1&forceNoKeyword=false&rh=n:42854041,n:44532031,n:76484031,p_4:Bum&size=22&pf_rd_r=1AGZDNCRDXJ9B3TQD9CW&pf_rd_m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=42854041&pf_rd_p=231490867&pf_rd_s=related-tab-3-5

Thanks for all the great advice.

No voucher schemes in Wandsworth (just cheap council tax) and I'll be moving countries not long after the birth so won't have the luxury of trying different types unfortunately. After moths of looking at reviews bumgenius seem to have more fans than not so have decided to give them a go. Also planning to use terries for the first month or two, depending on how big baby is. Figure terries can be recycled for many different uses afterwards!

So, I'm thinking 25 BG V4 and 12 terries to kick off. Sound about right?

And thanks for the mothercare tip Quertina! Unfortunately they don't have a full range of colours so may try calling a few places to get a price match tomorrow...

I think 20 BG would be more than enough. Are you planning to use cloth for night time as well? If so you might want to consider 2 part system, we use tots bots bamboozle and motherease wrap and never had a leak yet, and I don't change in the night anymore, so dd is in her nappy for 12 hours. Don't think BG would last that long.

BikeRunSki · 16/04/2012 07:55

I get by quite happily with 15 Tots Bots Easyfit. Got them half price and 3 for 2 at Mothercare earlier this year. They are all white but at that price I don't care.

I previously had a similar number of Tots Bots Fluffles for DS, which I sold as I wasn't going to have any more DC!

I have experimented with a few nappies and haven't got on with Bumgenius with either child, and don't know anyone who did!

Real nappy week starts today goreal.org.uk has a list of retailers with offers on. I use a mix of BG and other nappies but I would hestiate to recommend them solely

Babame.com are the European distributor and are bound to have good offers this week

Naisy · 16/04/2012 08:10

Thanks all. Interesting idea about changing at night, I hadn't considered it as I thought you just used an extra booster?

Managed to get the nappy lady to match mothercare at 10.66 ea, which is fantastic as she has the full range of colours too(or will order them....)

Yes real nappy week is a good time for bargains, i found bumgenius really good at first then they fell apart, on our second we have been using fuzzi bunz onesize which we had left over from 1dt child and i am trialing some Miosolo's at the moment which are really good. I wounldnt buy a load of one brand though in case they dont suit.

OlivesTree · 16/04/2012 18:34

I find this website is usually the cheapest...
http:/www.cleangreennappy.co.uk
I think they price match too. They also currently have 20% off on top of their already low prices for Real Nappy Week.

OlivesTree · 16/04/2012 18:41

BTW, I have found Close Parent Pop-Ins to be absolutely brilliant. I have the minkee ones which dry incredibly quickly and haven't had a single leak, as opposed to Pampers which we had loads of blow-outs with. I put off using them when DD was a teeny newborn as I thought the newborn bf poo would stain and ruin them. I need not have worried as they wash beautifully and don't stain like DD's clothes did when the pampers leaked. My 6 month old DD is still ebf. I should add that I do use pampers at night as I don't change her all night and they are a bit bulky on her with the boosters just yet.
