Moving from moses basket to a cot

Hi everyone, just a bit of advice really! Not even sure I'm in the right part of MN but hopefully someone can help.
My DD is 14 weeks old, my first child, and we're just preparing her bedroom and getting it ready for when we move her into her cot.
However, after been on many sites and asking many people, I have no idea what bedding to buy! Most people have said no cot bumpers, so I'll take that as a given. Not sure what else though. And what type of blankets will I need for the cot? Larger ones that I can tuck down the side?
Really need a manual haha.
Any tips on making it easier for DD when moving are really welcome too, I was just planning on gradually doing it. Putter her down for naps in there during the day and then slowly getting her used to being fed and sleeping in there etc.

We used a cot bumper & a temperature appropriate grobag.

I think you are doing the right things to be honest. I (and a lot of mumsnet) swear by using grobags as there are no sheets fr baby to get tangled in and when you feed her in the night she will stay warm.
I can't remember what the guidelines say about moving into their own room but isn't it 6 months? If so you have a while to prepare her.

It seems obvious, but no-one may have mentioned it yet, but someone told me to put the Moses basket inside the cot the first few times, so DD got used to waking up in there, then going to sleep in there. This worked well for us.

We just used a baby gro-bag with a thin cellular blanket over the top and wrapped around the edges of the cot but DD's not really a wriggler so she tended to be where we'd left her.

Baby sleeping bags (two different togs, one for summer, one for winter) and fitted bottom sheets. That's it. No need for blankets, bumpers, pillows etc
Some people put the Moses basket in the cot for a night or two to ease the transition.

My DD is 8months and she went in her cot from 10 weeks, she sleeps in a gro bag so no need to worry about blankets, we didn't have cot bumpers but only cause we never got around to buying them. She loves her cot, she stretches out and wriggles all around Smile

DD went to her own room at 10 weeks. She was a brilliant sleeper (at least 13 hours a night straight ever since, she's 2 now) and her room was right next to ours so it was the right decision for us.

abitdazed · 13/04/2012 08:35

Ah I was looking at the grobags, they look brilliant. Will that mean no blankets at all then? Unless really cold obviously. And do you have a fitted sheet on the bottom and that is all?
We will have to move her earlier I think, our room is too small to fit a cot or travel cot in and she will soon grow out of her moses basket I think. Not too sure what else to do really!

We bought a pack of bedding which included fitted sheets and cellular blankets. Tbh though we've only ever used the fitted sheets because DS sleeps in a gro bag (they're like baby sleeping bags). They're safe and it means baby doesn't wake up feeling cold because they've wriggled out from under the covers. You can get different togs depending on the time of year. They're much easier! No bumpers, pillow or duvet advised until at least 1 yo.

What i did to get DS used to his cot and bedroom was allow him to play in there to understand it's a fun, comfortable place and a safe haven. Initially we had mobiles over the cot which he loved to try to reach while he was lying there. Then i started putting him down for naps in his moses basket in his cot (initially the space around them can worry them a bit) and eventually moved him out of the moses basket altogether. He did the transition fine.

My DD went from Moses to cot at 5 weeks (still in our room) and she didn't notice the Difference!

We have a couple of 2.5 tog bags & 1.0 tog and a fitted sheet on mattress. That's all you need. Just adjust baby's clothing to suit room temperature.

abitdazed · 13/04/2012 08:38

That sounds brilliant, I think I'll start soon enough, once the curtains and blinds are fitted. Popping the moses basket in there and do it gradually. She sleeps so fantastic at the moment, 12 hours all the way through. Don't want to upset her sleep pattern too much but I'm sure she'll let me know.
Thanks for all the advice, I might seem really silly asking these questions but there is just so much mixed information out there and I just want to do whats best. Can always count on MN for an honest opinion

Stretchy fitted sheets on the mattress and then a sleeping bag.

Merino wool ones are fab - you don't have to worry about tog or age - one bag works from 3 months to 2 years in summer and winter. You just need 2 - 1 to use and one spare for the wash.

I got mine from Bambino Merino, but I think they have them on offer with Achica at the moment.

Fantastic, grobags are the way forward then! Will get onto buying some today.
