Is it okay to use low salt version in weaning. Looked for no salt stock cubes but couldn't find any.

There are baby ones - boots sell them (own brand) or sainburys sell Heinz ones in the baby food section.

No. Don't add any salt. It will taste very bland to you but will taste fine to baby. If you are making something for the whole family remove babies portion before adding stock/salt.

I've used the low salt version. Babies aren't supposed to have more than 1g in a day. The amount they get from low salt (Kallo) stock will be absolutely tiny.

I used the Kallo ones too, they'll only get a miniscule amount

the kallo ones are good and actually taste nice as well.

I think that low salt stock cubes are fine for babies over six months. In the early days of weaning children eat very little and breastmilk should be supplying the bulk of the calories.

Just be aware of hidden salt in bread, margerine, breakfast cereals

I think there has to be a balance. The goverment wants everyone to cut down on salt. The low salt limits are to prevent babies developing a liking to salt rather than necessarily safety. Trageries of babies dying from too much salt happend more when babies were weaned at 3 months

ThAnks for the info. DD is just six months. Some weaning recipes call for stock to make them. Will go for brands reccomended here and have a look on the baby aisle too. Interesting info Really tired - safety v the nanny state!

I'm not sure that a "nanny state" deserves any blame here!

It is really clear that salt intake is related to high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks in later life. We all eat too much salt. The government has given us guidelines (some of which is based on hard evidence, some of which is based on a best guess by experts) to help parents not cause accidental harm to their children.
