Wasn't sure where to put this. DS2 is about to start stagecoach. Has tiny (length), wide feet. We have a pair of jazz shoes that fit him length wise but I have to cram his feet in. I am going to take him to the shop during the week for advice and to maybe get the next size up, but what do boys wear under jazz shoes. Socks? bare feet?

DS2 btw wants a pair of pink ballet shoes dh muttered something along the lines of "we're never going to get grandchildren"

I'd get black or white ballet socks - ballet socks are thinner than regular socks and don't stop you 'feeling the floor' through jazz or ballet shoes. Also won't make his wide feet too much wider!
Try asking in the shop for wide fit jazz shoes - you might get lucky.

Have you looked at the difference between the lace up and slip ons? I know that sounds mad, but I found the slip ons like BOATS for my kids. Also the teacher says but AT LEAST the next size up. In fact dd is in size 11, when in normal shoes she is a size 9. They wear normal socks as do all the kids. Get a bigger size and thick socks if necessary, then go to thinner socks as his feet grow

Also at Stagecoach.

cheers- I did wonder about slip on ones. If it's normal socks underneath we will need bigger ones. My children are always difficult to find shoes that fit. Weird shaped feet, all of them

Stagecoach jazz shoes are quite narrow fitting. The laced ones and the elastic ones are also slightly different fittings. The eleastic ones can be narrower around the front part of the foot but allow for wider ankles. You do need at least one size bigger than their normal show size.

Don't buy them from dance shops if you can help it. They are cheaper to buy direct from Stagecoach £16 for size 4 and a half and below, and they should have some sizes you can try on. I had to pay £19 for dd's jazz shoes at a local shop as she is only a size 7 so would need an 8 or 9 jazz shoes and the smallest size at Stagecoach is 10!

Go a bit early (PLEASE DON'T TURN UP WITH 3 MINS TO THE START OF THE CLASS AND EXPECT TO GET KITTED OUT!) and try them on. Sorry can you guess what happened to me first day of term!!!!

The boys mostly wear socks underneath them, especially this time of year. The thinner the better.

Check with the Principal but some allow a 2 week grace period where they don't have to buy the shoes until they have done their 2 weeks. However if this is the case he does need to wear plimsolls or softish trainers.

Hope he has fun. How old is he?

Thanks! He's 4 with size 7 and a half feet (ds1 was size 8 at 2!). I've sent of the payment for the term today and out a note in saying I'm having problems with the shoes. I've asked the principal to bring a size 10, but said that I think it'll be too big. I'm going to try and take him to a dance shop during the week and try the next size up. He's recovering from the fluey thing so its a bit of a nightmare. Also we are away next week so my dad has to take him, so I would rather do it all before hand iyswim!

He has a very high instep, whcih according to numerous shoe fitters is our problem

typos galore sorry! Ds3's feet (age 1) are almost as big as ds2's. Honestly he has tiny feet!

DD does jazz and we get her Jazz shoes from a dance shop. Their seems to be two kinds one of which better suits wider feet, they can also include a insole to help with fitting. Can't remeber how much but no more than £15. Ballet shoes are only about £11 to £12 and come in black too.

julienetmum · 05/02/2006 23:53

He sounds like dd then. She too has a high instep, it is a nightmare getting school shoes for her. She is 4 too.

If he is 7 and a halfs it is unlikely a 10's will fit though it is worth a try. In which case it may be the dance shop prices I'm afraid. You can imagine how mad I was I had to pay thier prices when I can get Stagecoach ones wholesale!!! We did nearly have to resort to black ballet shoes which were cheaper but we felt that dd should set a good example. The dance shop did have to order them in for us, they took a week to come in.
