4 year old has developed phobia of all things buzzing! Nightmare!

My 4 year old boy, who is a sensitive little thing as it, has developed a fear of all things buzzing. We have spent the last 2 evenings with hours of hysterical crying, refusing to eat, refusing to go to bed in case there was a bee in his room, etc. I have never seen him like this, almost vomiting with crying. For hours. At first I was trying to tread gently around this, not wanting to minimise his fears, but my patience wore thin this evening and I ended up shouting at him. Not sure how to respond for best. He is a shy, anxious boy anyway. I don't want to make him worse but don't want to encourage anxiety. I can only hope that normal British weather resumes and the bees go away!

Has he had a bee in his room or been stung? Try doing a 'bee hunt' with him each night and maybe pin a net curtain around open window so he knows they can not get in. I would then find a nature dvd about bees making honey etc so he can see how amazing they are and remind him bees only sting if they are threatend as it can kill them. You can have a competition with him in the arden to count the bees and see who see the most. Record the results and get him help you to send them to the WWF website as they are doing a study on bee numbers and he would be helping the scientists save the bees.

DS (5) was terrified of anything that flies last summer. I explained that only few sting, why they sting (so stay still and don't flail) and described in gruesome detail what happens when a bee stings (to the bee!) which he enjoyed!

Now he is only scared of wasps and tells people to keep away from bees so the bees don't hurt themselves!

Take him to a bug zoo!

DS started this 3 years ago. He's still going.

I suppose in his room it may be worth trying the monster tricks

I spent a day painting DS room with anti-monster paint (he was at nursery so didn't know I was watching tv with a cuppa). He seemed to accept this!

Thanks everyone. He loves being a scientist, so the bee count sounds like a great idea. And yes, he has been stung - twice!
