Mother in-law experiences and tips

Ive had what you would call a difficult relationship with my mother in-law, we got off to a bad start due to a difficult situation which is another matter, out of both our control. I guess she saw me as taking her son and grandson away which is understandable and I felt she was cold hearted and treated my DS1 from a previous relationship like he didnt exist... as well as our DS2 which is her grandson.

Anyway we have both sorted things out, I feel so much better now as does she, bizarrely we are both very alike in a lot of ways, which I find reassuring, it took a bit of a meltdown to sort things out but nevertheless its sorted and life is so much happier now :)

What are your experiences in these situations and tips if you have any?

You were both obviously very stressed when you first met and felt helpless, you boht lashed out. You have now found out more about each otehr and realised that you are alike.

I hope that you will both get on from now on. I am glad you managed to sort things out. And hope she treats your eldest better now.

my first MIL and I didn't get on at all, she was very much of the opinion that I was not good enough for her darling boy. Luckily we never had kids together (although I did have a miscarriage which she wasted no time in blaming on me).. my second (and technically still current) MIL was totally different... lovely and caring, even tho I became pregnant very early in the relationship she never criticised and has always been very supportive. My ex and I split up 4 years ago, our son is now 12 but MIL still rings me, never forgets my birthday and is always there if I need her. They live 3 hours away but their love for their grandson ensures that what could have been tricky has been easy...
so, advice - well mainly it's to treat her as you want to be treated, it will make you feel good and she will be pleased, appreciate her - am sure you do but I know that I sometimes forget to actually tell people that I appreciate them, be patient and take it slowly - don't expect too much too soon, but i am sure that it will be ok in the long term - you both sound like caring people who are willing to leave the past in the past and move on... hope it works out :)
