How do you deal with fibbing/ exaggerating?

Hi All- My DD2 age 4 has started over the past month to fabricate the truth but it's not always obvious- she has the sincerest face I've ever seen!!! If I say 'did that really happen?' (even when I know it didn't) she will tell me 'yes' at least 4 times before admitting 'no'. Last week she said a schoolfriend swallowed a stone and went to hospital, I did not make a fuss and just told her I thought she was interesting just the way she was and did not need to make stories up etc.
Another incident was that I had told her not to take a small toy to nursery because it would get lost/ be unsafe for younger ones- only to find that after DD1 had been dropped off at school that it was in her pocket- I asked her she said no- I then said if I find it in your pocket I will put it in the bin- do you want to tell me the truth- again no, so I got it out of her pocket and put it in a nearby bin- she did not react too much as she knew it was wrong of her and I acted hurt that she had fibbed to me- another time she put her breakfast in the bin and came up to me in shower all proud of herself saying she had eaten all the breakfast- I believed her genuine face until I saw said breakfast in bin! cue the naughty corner!
So you can see the varying degrees of sneakyness- I don't like it and I am so worried about starting school in September like this- how will I know what is really going on in her day?! She is very social, funny and loving but this phase is throwing me!
Never had this with DD1 so any advice on a consistent way of dealing with this would be much appreciated- sorry I have rambled!

My DD did this soon after starting in reception. Came home and said a girl had punched her in the face! I spoke to the teachers found out it never happened and realised she just likes making things up. She still makes things up now but is more likely to tell me or she back tracks and tells the truth. I don't punish her, I just say her nose will grow long like Pinocchio and she believes me so is reluctant to lie incase her nose goes all pointy!! She's 6 now.
Sorry if I haven't helped! But thought I'd share..
