Red rings round thighs (cloth wearing), really don't want to have to use disps...

Hello
I'm new to mumsnet and am seeking advice on how best to treat & prevent the angry red circles which appear on my son's thighs when he wears cloth. He's been in cloth since he was less than a month old (totsbots, MEOS both with ME airflow wrap) and until about 3 weeks ago we didn't have any problems at all (he's 22weeks BTW). He does have eczema, for which we use Aveeno daily and HC 1% cream if it flares up. I really don't know if these red rings are nappy rash or eczema. They don't respond to Sudocrem or Metanium, but if I put HC cream on and keep him in disposables then it heals very well. As soon as we put him back in cloth it begins to flare up again. I've tried washing all the nappies on a hot wash with no detergent, also washing them with white vinegar. I slather his thighs with Aveeno, but if I keep him in cloth for a couple of days then the rings just get redder and more angry looking (dark red and a rough texture). He has "nappy off" time every day too BTW.
I really love my cloth nappies and am hoping somone could come up with some advice to help us carry on using them.
Thanks in advance,

loosen the wrap around his legs. it doesn't need to be tight, as long as it covers the nappy.

peanutbutter · 03/02/2006 19:16

We've tried doing that; he has them on the loosest leg setting but it makes no difference. I stupidly then tried loosening the nappies at the leg but of course the wee ran down his trousers!

hmmm you could try a wrap like the stacinator which just has fleece or wool round the leg rather than elastic

peanutbutter is it possible he has been left in the nappy a little too long if he is a heavy wetter? Not 100% on this as am only new to cloths myself..lol

starlover · 03/02/2006 19:19

here

you could also use wool or fleece at nighttime

spots · 03/02/2006 19:29

We got a couple of tots redwraps which are fleece. They are bulkier than our Motherease wraps but really soft on the skin. DD has faint traces of where her ME wrap has been on each thigh, but never with the redwrap.

peanutbutter · 03/02/2006 19:35

Thank you for that link starlover, i'm doubtful that it's the wrap rubbing on his skin TBH but it's definitely worth considering as I'm determined to keep on with cloth. Nemo - I suppose it's possible I've not changed him enough; it's never more than 2-3 hours but perhaps I should do 1-2 hours?

i know misdee uses them, as her dd3 has excema.
she has found that the elastic in the other wraps can cause it to flare up

Nemo1977 · 03/02/2006 19:39

peanut butter maybe he just needs the nappies boosting more in the boyish areas..sur you probably already tried that.

starlover · 03/02/2006 19:40

if it was the wee it'd be all over though surely?

have you tried changing the wrap every time as well as the nappy? in case the binding has got wet

MrsDoolittle · 03/02/2006 19:46

This really does sound like it's the wrap causing problems. I have a number of Motherease wraps and there are a couple that cause this on dd, always the same ones and I have no idea why, the others a fine.
I would suggest the stacinator too. I always use a stacinator fleece wrap at night and I think it's brilliant.
I plan to use one of the stacinator fleecey leg ones for #2 when he arrives too.
Don't give in to disposables just yet
Good luck

peanutbutter · 03/02/2006 19:47

It's only around his thighs, in a more or less perfect circle, and the rest of his nappy area is perfect. I never considered changing his wrap at every change TBH - I swap them round daily - is that what it could be then....? Right, that's what we'll do from tomorrow. How often should I be putting my wraps through the washing machine? I normally give them a good wipe clean once a day and washer them once a week. (Also - DS sleeps in disposables at night because he was waking up and complaining even in a stuffed Huggle.)

just thinking that if the binding is getting wet then it could be rubbing?

i change mine every 2-3 nappies. and wash every couple of days

MrsDoolittle · 03/02/2006 19:53

I'd second that starlover.
I think you've got urine on the cuffs of your wraps causing problems

peanutbutter · 03/02/2006 19:54

Okay so from tomorrow we'll swap the wrap at each change and see what happens for a couple of days. If his skin has the same reaction we'll try the stacinator wrap. Thanks for your advice everyone.

Try ME Rikki wraps - Velcro fastening and alot easier to fit - DD was long and skinny and poppers never fitted properly.

popsycalindisguise · 03/02/2006 19:56

this happened to misdee;s dd3 and I gave here our lovebums wrap which has fleece cuffs and I think it stopped it...

peanutbutter · 03/02/2006 20:01

Poor old ds; it simply didn't enter my head that the wrap could be causing this, but I suppose not washing them often enough and the cuffs having a bit of urine on, it's not going to take much rubbing at all for his skin to react.

Have you solved the problem, Peanutbutter? I had the same thing with dd - her excema would flare up nastily around her thighs. I solved it by swapping from Totsbots to Bumble nappies - thankfully she was due to go into size 2's anyway, so I wasn't paying for an 'extra' set of nappies. Bumbles are fleece lined, so the elasticated leg cuffs are fleece-lined and therefore stay-dry. She still gets the odd excema flare-up, but they're not nappy-related anymore .

misdee · 08/02/2006 22:28

yes, my dd3 ended up with what looked burns round her thighs from the binding on the wraps. as my dd2 reacts to some elastics i guessed what it was. at night i use fleece cuffed wraps from lovebums (popycal kindly gave me one), fleece wraps or wool longies. the longies are my favourites. i do still use the ME wraps during the day and tend to change them every 2 nappies to keep them as clean as possible. dd3 also reacts to the elastic cuffs on dispoables.

peanutbutter · 11/02/2006 19:10

Hello - sorry, haven't got to the computer for a few days. Yes, ds's thighs are much better thanks - I bought 2 large Stacinators a new large ME wrap too and have been swapping them round and washing them every 2 days as well as giving them a good hand rinse every night. On top of this I've been fanatical with aveeno with metanium on top; literally every couple of hours. Phew! The red rings are still there, but infinitely better, rather than looking like burns they're just as bit red IYSWIM. I was a little surprised, however, at the v snug fit of the stacinator - has anyone else found this? My ds is a bit of a cannonball, he's 23wks and 19lbs but the large stacinator is meant to be from 20-30lbs I think.
jennywren I'm interested in trying Bumbles but simply can't afford to spend any more on nappy paraphenalia at present (I'm on additional mat leave).

www.lovebums.co.uk are good for fleece cuffed wraps.
