I'm 40+1 and have just put the crib in our bedroom

But it got me thinking, what do you/did you dress your newborn in for bed at this time of year? I know people say it's usually one more layer than you would wear but I never wear a stitch in bed Blush

Do you think a sleepsuit and sleeping bag would be enough or will the baby need a vest aswell?

DD was easy because she was a full on freezing cold winter baby, I just wrapped her up in lots!

they say a vest and a sleepsuit is fine if the room is between 18 and 20 degrees.
with a blanket.
a newborn doesn't have the motor skills to kick a blanket off, but tuck it in.

Mine wore baby grow, sleep suit and then blanket/s on top. They don't need wrapping up in hundreds of layers but newborns at this time of year still normally need a few layers.

My midwife told me to always gauge how warm they are from feeling inside they're baby grow on chest or back, as there hands and feet can often be cold. Smile

I had both my DD at this time of year, it is a little bit of trial and error, because some babies feel the heat/ cold more than others. My flat was quite cold so I had my dd in a babygrow, a sheet and a cot blanket. she didn't go into a sleeping bag immediately as she was too small for it.

dd1 was born this time 5 years ago.
she was in vest (shortsleeved), sleepsuit and grobag.

a week after she was born, it snowed. We didn't have a thick coat or pram suit for her, just a light jacket, and there were none in the shops. She mostly went about bundled up in blankets like a little parcel for a few weeks.

PoultryInMotion · 23/03/2012 16:59

Thank you! I know DD prefered to be swaddled so I never used the sleepingbags for a few months, I suppose you're right it's trial and error!

Ds currently sleeping in vest, sleepsuit and 2.5tog grobag. He needs it as it is still cool at night (often frost in the morning) and our bedroom a bit breezy due to shite window. If window were well sealed I'd probably us a summer grobag.

InfiniteFairylights · 23/03/2012 18:36

I swaddled my DD for quite a while, as she would not sleep otherwise. I don't know what the official line on swaddling is these days, it wasn't approved of when I had DD, but I didn't approve of DD only ever sleeping if I cuddled her, which was the only alternative!

OctopusSting · 23/03/2012 18:38

I 'thought' grobags were only for 6months + although they may have extended their range. If they can fit their heads through the neck hole they shouldn't be used as they could slip down into them

I used sleepsuits and cellular blankets for a newborn, with swaddling for the first few weeks

PoultryInMotion · 24/03/2012 10:11

Ooh, I think I have a couple of cellular blankets left over from DD, will use them. Presumably it's less of a problem if they manage to flick it over their face in their sleep than a fleecy type one? < paranoid >

Grobags are safe from 8lbs :)

Annpan88 · 24/03/2012 10:44

DS has just turned one. I was so paranoid about him over heating that the poor little soul was probably never warm Blush. I used vests at first, with a sleepsuit and cellular blanket, then as i got warmed I stopped using the vest!

Congratulations!

My DD I almost 3, we did vest and sleepsuit with a blanket at first, the a 1 tog sleeping bag after a couple of weeks. That's scotland though!

We may have been a bit over cautious though, I have photos of her first outing in clothes, coat, thick hat and blankets when most folk were going about in short sleeves!

Spring babies are great though, it's lovely to have the whole summer ahead for walks with the pram.

BabydollsMum · 27/03/2012 11:55

I had DD in a very mild Feb last year and we just had her in a sleepsuit without a vest as our house was quite hot. Definitely recommend swaddling though for the first month at least - it helps them sleep better (when they do sleep!) and puts your mind at ease too that they won't pull covers over their heads. DD was very little though so wasn't in a grobag until about 6 weeks. Again, once she was it was a big relief to think that she was snugly but safe.

booksandchoc · 10/04/2012 21:35

my dd is 11 weeks and she wears a vest, sleepsuit, unbuttoned cardigan, and sleeps in a grobag with a blanket too. before she went into her grobag she slept with a folded flat sheet, cellular blanket x2 and fleece blanket. think we maybe have a very cold flat?
