So, 9-month old, toothbrush, toothpaste, tooth. How does that all work?

Any tips cos I'm not getting much cleaning going on.

I've been trying to brush DS's teeth for about 6 months and he is now 16 months. Most of the time he takes the brush, sucks the tothpaste off it and I have a go at scrubbing but he laughs and moves away. he only has 8 teeth so I figure a bit of fluoride from the paste is better than nothing. he prefers it if I brush mine with my brush and then use it on him, I find I get more actual contact with his teeth that way..........

get a finger brush and let him/her suck on it. at that age their teeth can't get that filthy imo

no idea as ds LOVES having his done!
he likes watching himself in the mirror while i do it... if that's any help? and he likes watching me do mine too

I don't use toothpaste with dd2 (10mths) - I just use a baby toothbrush (MAM) and then let her chew on it for a bit afterwards. She only has 3 teeth though and I agree with mumofmonsters - they don't get very dirty - molars are the ones you need to be more careful with. Think about where you have fillings - bet they're all in the molars, not in the front teeth.

biglips · 02/02/2006 19:23

my 16 mths old DD is getting used to it as we both said "AAHHHHHHHH" i start using it about your babas age

nowanearlyNicemum · 02/02/2006 19:28

if you use toothpaste, do you just use normal stuff or is there a child-friendly version available?

biglips · 02/02/2006 19:41

nnooooooo. use the Milk teeth toothpaste for babies

starlover · 02/02/2006 19:42

nothing wrong with normal stuff... as long as you just use a dab!

nowanearlyNicemum · 02/02/2006 19:50

where do you find the milk teeth toothpaste?

Twiglett · 02/02/2006 20:00

actually you shouldn't use normal toothpaste on babies because they are more inclined to swallow it and the usual suspects are flouridated

best to get one designed for under 6s .. like macleans .. they're in the toothpaste aisle in all chemists / supermarkets

brush your teeth at the same time .. its more getting them used to it at this stage

starlover · 02/02/2006 20:07

not a problem, if like i said you use a dab, not a big blob!
what do you think we all did before kids toothpaste was invented????

Twiglett · 03/02/2006 08:12

My BIL who is a dentist told me that it wouldn't matter if we used a small dab of adult toothpaste occasionally but that as a general rule of thumb it was not a good idea to use flouridated toothpaste with kids who can swallow it

he might be wrong ..but I'll take his word for it

pablopatito · 03/02/2006 09:37

My HV, who I presume isn't a dentist, told me adult toothpaste was fine, just to use a very small amount.

At the moment, DS won't let me clean his teeth at all but he will clean his own. Or rather, he will put the toothbrush into his mouth (normally the wrong was round but not always!). But I think he puts his tongue in front of his one and only tooth and then cleans his tongue which perhaps isn't the best technique.

Our dog uses a chewy toy designed to clean dogs' teeth. Is there anything like this for babies?

DD won't let me near her mouth with anything, let alone a tooth brush!

sorry for having hi-jacked your thread somewhat but thanks for the advice re toothpaste. have found Colgate first so will be seeing what dd thinks of that this evening.
