dd 11 months, has an ear infection and is on amoxicillin syrup for the first time today, normally I can't keep her awake past 6.30, however she has only this second gone to sleep.

Didn't make my DD hyper when she had it when she was 14 months!

No, it didn't make my 17mo DS hyper when he had a course a couple of weeks ago. It did, however, upset his tummy and make his nappies even smellier than usual.

Perhaps she couldn't sleep because her ear was hurting? DS never sleeps very well when he is poorly.

The GP told me two weeks ago that amoxicillin makes children sleepy. The syrup is sugar free too. Maybe your child is just feeling much better Smile.

I think it makes my ds hyper, he has recurrent chest infections and has had to have a lot of amoxicillin. he is normally quite a sleepy boy because he has low muscle tone, and everything takes a lot of effort, when he is ill, his energy is even lower and he spends a lot of time floppy in my arms. Wheh he has amoxicillin, I notice about 20 minutes after having it, he has a kind of wild eyed stare and doesn't know what to do with himself.

Check to see if it includes colouring - some children's drugs still include stuff like sunset yellow, tartrazine etc., which have an association with hyper reactions. I experienced this with an over-the-counter child pain relief, was supposed to have a sedating effect, but my 18month old had dilated pupils and was tearing around like a mad thing at 3am. A bit of detective work, further experience, and we found that it was a reaction to the colouring added to make it look a pretty pink...

Yes my DS was going crazy on it when he was about 20 months. I've never known him to be so hyper. The doctor seemed to think that he wasn't reacting to the medicine, just feeling better, but i'm not so sure!
