Moving Abroad

We are about to move from London to Toronto. DD is 5 and DS is 2 and a half. Any good advice for settling them in to their new home/life?

Maybe obvious but make sure you have some of their things in your luggage and not in the packing cases. When we moved we even took dds toothbrush holder in our luggage just so she had some homely things about her.

I think alsomake sure you have some time to really explore the area with them to let them know that there are fun things to do, get them involved in groups etc so they dont feel isolated.

BB - did you want familiar toys and food? Or was it people and places?

We have just moved abroad, ds's are 5.5 and 2. I was expecting all manner of problems with them but so far it had been fine. We made sure that their bedrooms were unpacked and sorted first, so that they had one room which was familiar to them. All their toys and books out for them, no boxes in their rooms either.
We had the luxury of PIL to look after them whilst we unpacked, which was a massive help.
They were both shown photos of the new house in advance, so they had some idea of where we would be living.

It has been a huge upheaval for them both, but we've tried to make it as exciting for them as possible, and with webcams and MSN they're still able to keep in regular contact with family and friends.

I am finding playgroups and soft play areas an absolute sanctuary, we've only been here a few weeks and already they have made new friends, which I think is vital.

I think I underestimated how 'flexible' children really are!
