Im wondering how other people feel about saying this to their children. I always thought it was really bad and actually worse then swearing but Im not sure others agree.

I never wanted to say that to my children and didn't for a very long time. I even managed to only let it slip out the once when they were babies and one of them was a massive screamer!

Lately though it keeps slipping out. I don't like it!

I don't say it.

However, the other day, DD was going on and on and on about something and it was getting to me, because I was dealing with something else at the time. I could feel myself getting nippy, and I said to her, "shut your mouth".

I meant it in a literal sense, because if she closed her mouth, she wouldn't be talking any more. DD was a bit upset at this, and in hindsight, I shouldn't have said it. If I'd said "close your mouth", it wouldn't have sounded as bad Sad

Depends on age of DCs, not appropriate for young children. As other posters have said it's generally frowned on at primary school.

I'm afraid 11 and 14 year old DDs butting in when I'm on the phone or fighting when I'm driving are very likely to be told to shut up.

If a child is trying to tell you something at a bad moment or genuinely wants attention then shut up is not appropriate.

If they are old enough to know they are being rude, silly and annoying that's different.

Sigh. I've said it, often enough it would seem, to the cat. Ahhh, our bloody cat. Always older, never closer to shuffling off her mortal coil. Then DS1 (2years) said to DH "shut up cat! You're a cat, daddy."

Cue mortified face.

Oh trust me it nearly has slipped out but by the grace of God I've managed to keep it in. Change shut up to "be quiet" I've recently started saying, but trying to stop it, "get out of the way" when they stand directly in front of the TV which I hardly EVER watch ehen they are up!! Seriously all I've said "excuse me please, can you sit on a chair please, maybe a million times and they don@t listen. Try hard as shut up isn't a nice thing to hear, I've gone back to a FIRMER "can you sit down Pllllleeeeasse!!!"

plipplops · 21/03/2012 17:55

I don't say it as I won't let them say it to me, although I do say Enough, Stop (usually with a cross and slightly patronising outstretched "talk to the hand" action) And if they shout "enough" at me, even if they're really cross, it's hard not to laugh...

moonblushtomato · 21/03/2012 18:25

I never, ever thought I would say it to a child of mine and never did with my first.

However, when pushed to my limits with my 2 subsequent, close in age, DCs I do find myself saying it and hating myself for it.

I will try the "Enough!" approach, much less commonGrin

Pollyh- stop cluttering up the boards advertising your blog.

AngryFeet · 21/03/2012 18:40

I don't think it is rude. I say it all the time. It is no different from be quiet in my opinion. Don't see the big deal, sorry. Shut the fuck up is rude though Grin

PooPooInMyToes · 22/03/2012 21:07

Yellow. I've done the same and said shut your mouth just meaning close your lips so no sound comes out!

I say it. It was on the list of things to never say to my children along with 'naughty'. Oops. I was such a perfect parent before I had kids Grin

I usually say it when they're shouting and bickering with each other, then taking it in turns to come crying to me telling tales. Sometimes I just want all of the crying and whinging and whining to stop. Sometimes I just want everyone to shut up! I leave 'the fuck' out of it though (for now!)

I never wanted to be a shouty mum but I seem to have turned into one. It's a bloody hard job!

You're right ginger.
