Hiya.. I am new to this forum.. Can anyone tell me if it is ok to give DS medised for a couple of weeks, just one dose at night to assist with teething? Has anyone else done this?

hi Finn6040 welcome to mumsnet..

yes it fine, my ds (3) lived on it while he was cutting his teeth. it very good stuff i do still give it to him now ( at nite time) if he has a cold or is under the weather.

MarsOnLife · 01/02/2006 17:30

hi finn. Welcome. Yes as Trophywife says it's fine. It got my twins through teething.

LIZS · 01/02/2006 17:43

Didn't discover Medised until recently (thanks to MN) but personally preferred to use pain relievers sparingly and got by mainly with Dentinox gel and occcasional dosings of Calpol. dd was worse than ds though.

Not sure I'd use Medised routinely. I'd use plain paracetamol/ibuprofen syrup instead.

mazzystar · 01/02/2006 17:47

I've noticed its quite powerful stuff, when we've occasionally used it.

A couple of my friend's children seem to have little addictions to it forming, so I'd save it for the really bad times if you can.

Spoke to my GP about this today actually as dd has had 2 colds in a row, is teething in a big way and now has an ear infection! i have been giving medised most nights for several weeks and was worried about it. he said not to worry and just to give it as long as not more than the reccomended dose in 24 hours. Its not that medised is stronger than calpol/nurofen etc, just that it contains a mild antihistamine which can make babies sleepy (and reduces the swelling in nose so they can breathe easier). Some babies just seem to have a much harder time with teeth than others and I think if you can reduce the pain and medised helps them sleep too then its worth it. Doc was really adamant that one dose at night over several weeks would not cause any problems at all.

starlover · 01/02/2006 20:27

i was told it's fine to use... we had to give it to ds for a week or so when he had an allergic reaction because it was the only thing they would let us have for an under 1!

Finn6040 · 01/02/2006 20:40

Thanks all for your reasurance...especially Lucy99 as i really did feel like i was drugging ds !

Oh I swear by medised.

Helped my twins too through teething.

aids a restful sleep dont know now if that benefitted the twins or mum

Elibean · 01/02/2006 22:17

I've never used it for more than 3-4 nights in a row, and only ever for streamy colds (as it dries them up a bit). I felt more comfortable with baby Nurofen for teething - it seemed to work much better than Calpol, and as its an anti-inflammatory seemed the most appropriate pain med.
Medised is great stuff though - have just taken a 12 yr old's dose myself as have a stinker of cold can can't sleep!

GDG · 01/02/2006 22:38

Mine are dosed up tonight but coughing is still keeping ds3, and us, awake

quofan · 02/02/2006 09:20

welcome Finn6040
What a fantastic username you have - my ds1 is called Finn. Love it!! Used Medised for dd and ds1 and it was a great help.

jco · 02/02/2006 09:26

can you please tell me what Medised is ladies, my kids have really bad colds at the mo and are up all night, could really do with something to help them sleep til they're over the worse

Finn6040 · 02/02/2006 09:37

Hi JCO, Medised is an OTC medicine just like Calpol etc but has a mild seditive/antihistimine in to aid restlful sleep and ease breathing

jambuttie · 02/02/2006 13:56

maybe jinxed myself coming on this thread last ight as I have used it on the twins today.

They are LOADED with that "man flu" crabby as sin

Fimbo · 02/02/2006 13:59

Medised rules in our house!

expectingsummerihope · 02/02/2006 16:24

My ds hates the taste so won't have it anywhere his lips! Nurofen is the best thing I've tried for him.

expectingsummerihope · 02/02/2006 16:24

erm meant anywhere near his lips

Bugsy2 · 02/02/2006 16:44

anyone who has a child you doesn't like Medised, ask your pharmacist for Dozol. Exactly the same active ingredients with no nasty bright pink chemical taste. It is clear and just a little bit sweet. For some reason Boots doesn't sell it but most independent pharmacists do.
