Why is 1 the magic age to move onto quilt and pillow?

Why is it that at aged 1, babies can move out of their sleeping bags and under a quilt and pillow? Is it safe? My nearly 1 year old moves about so much in her sleep I'm worried she'll keep slipping under the quilt or keep knocking the cover off and get cold! Is there a special pillow I'm meant to buy? I have a cot quilt which came from mamas and papas with a pillow case but no pillow.
Am I being a bit ridiculous? :)

Grobags are your friend. Keep them in there as long as possible!

There may be special pillows but they're designed to take your money away from you rather than be necessary. Don't bother if child looks nice and comfry.

I'm no help on why the rule's a year, but why not keep your baby in a sleeping bag, if that's working for you? We are, find them really good.

I have never heard of this

my 2.6 yo DS still sleeps in a cot in a sleeping bag on his tummy with his bum in the air.

Maybe I'm retarding his development

x-post with Mary - great minds think alike!

she's started standing up in her cot whilst still in the grobag so I'm worried she's going to trip herself up and bash her head on the end of the cot which is solid wood. I do really like the gro bags, like you say they're so convenient and she looks cute and cosy in them but I'm worried she'll hurt herself!

Ds has only just moved into a bed with pillow/duvet, he was happily in sleeping bags up til now and he's almost 3.

I think the 12mths thing is about when they are big enough to not suffocate under a pillow/duvet so it's a minimum age for safety rather than a recommended age iyswim. I might be wrong on that though!

Agree with lindsell - it's the minimum age for safety. 2.2 y.o. DS is in a sleeping bag and will be for a long time yet.

DS is 13 months and we bought his first duvet last week - not because he's 1 and we have to, but because he moves around a lot, seemed frustrated to be in his sleeping bag and every time we were snuggling under my duvet he seemed to love it.

I would have been happy to keep him in a sleeping bag for longer, but I think he prefers his duvet by the looks of it. No pillow though, he seems happy without one so I can't see the need.

Had the same problem when my little boy was 1. He would trip over in his sleeping bag, but kick off a duvet. We found the solution to be those really thick, warm, fleecy baby grows worn over his jim jams. That way, it didn't matter if he kicked off his covers, and when he woke up in the morning, he could move around his room with out tripping over and stay nice and cosy.

Neither of my dc got a duvet and pillow before moving into a bed at 2.5; ds1 was such a wriggler, he stayed in grobag for another 6 mths in a bed, or i would have been up evry night tucking him back in. Dd2 is not so wriggly, she just lies face down with bottom up, but both get lots of layers of pyjamas applied in the winter to save them waking up because cold.

The only reason we moved dd to a duvet was that like too tired dc, she tried it and loves it (we were away , she was sick on her gro bag so no alternative).

But that's her- dd2 will stay in gro bags as long as is comfy.
