Couple of questions about Bumgenius, from a novice...

...just started using them with ds (16 months) and so far it's going well. Was wondering though - do you take out the inserts before washing or leave them in? If you leave them in, presumably you take them out before tumble drying, as I didn't think you were meant to tumble the outer shell? Also, how many inserts do you use? I bought the nappies when pregnant and have only got round to trying them now Blush so I can't remember what they said to do. I have been putting a normal insert in plus an extra-long one with poppers on, done up so the thickest bit will be approximately under his willy. This does make the nappy very bulky though - is this what you're meant to do or am I using too many inserts?

Finally, he is on the biggest setting (with the press studs) - is this normal at 16 months? I don't see how the nappies will last til he's 2 or beyond at this rate...

I take out the inserts as I change DD2 and put both parts in nappy bucket.

I sometimes tumble inners (in winter) but to be honest, they dry fast enough on the line or airer so it is rare that I tumble them.

Extra long inserts sound like additional night stuffing, try just using one insert and see how you go on.

I didn't find Bum Genius and true birth to potty nappies. Though I do love them. My DD1 trained very early so no issues with her. But I had to put my DS in disposables at 2.5 yr, as he was too big for the Bum Genius ones.

That said I reckon DD2 will be fine for a good while yet.

Hi,

You can leave the inserts in and just put the whole nappy in the washing machine. We do a cold rinse first, then take out the inners and then do the wash. You can just leave the inners in for the whole wash though, most will come out during the wash but any that don't you can separate for drying.

The long insert with the poppers is your everyday/night one, you should do as you are and leave the thick bit near his schmackle. If you need extra you can put the little insert in, what they call the newborn insert. You can buy hemp/bamboo stuffers if you need more absorbency overnight. The nappies will seem very bulky if you are used to disposables.

Not sure about the size issue, DS is only 3mo.

I take them out as I do a change and put the nappy in the bucket in its separate bits - if you don't want to touch them then I find just shaking them makes the insert drop out if it's heavy and wet.

We don't tumble dry but yes, would take out inserts and just TD those if we did.

Each nappy comes with two inserts - larger one with poppers and a small thin newborn one. I've always used both though don't find them particularly bulky - do you mean compared to disposables? With DD I used them unfolded, with DS now I popper the big one down a bit so it's thickest over his willy.

DS is just under 8 months and has been on the biggest setting for quite a while now! We didn't get them until DD was quite big (can't remember how old now) but always used them on the biggest setting but they fitted (smallish) DD until she PTed at just over 3 yos. Both my children are quite tall in the rise (ie the measurement from crotch to tummy button) so maybe yours is too? But you'll find they don't get a lot bigger after the first initial 6-12 months (DS is 70 cm now, DD only about 92 cm, nearly 3 years between them).

I agree, DS is 5 months and already on the largest size setting. How will they last till he is 2? Confused other than that I think they're great although we have to reinforce them with bamboozles at night.
