It has taken me and dh an age to get round to going shopping for baby items.

So today we went out and got new carpret for babies room (old carpet was full of paint,my husband had never heard of covering the carpets) silver cross 4d pram, draws (with a change matt top) and cotbed, bumper set, hooded towels, sleep bag things, curtains and change matt and one of those chairs for breast feeding(expensive day,we have saved hard).

my sister just rang before to see what we bought and kicked off when I said a bumper set and was going on about how dangerous they are.If they were so dangerous,Im sure they couldnt sell them!!.Im so annoyed with her right now.

What are your thoughts on these bumper things?? please.

Current SIDS prevention advice is to avoid cot bumpers. They can be a suffocation hazard. On a recent maternity practioner course we were told that you only need a bottom sheet and a sleeping bag in the cot.

I had the same argument with my own sister in babies r us a few weeks ago, she was telling me they wouldn't sell them if they weren't safe. They are not safe, they shouldn't be on sale - I'm just hoping that she will listen to the midwife/health visitor when they tell her.

a) they are a bit risky because any excess stuff which could potentially get caught over your DDs face enhances the risk of SIDs I believe

b) I found when DD discovered her hands and became obsessed with grabbing anything in sight the bumpers became massively annoying as grabbing at the tie bits distracted DD from attempting to sleep

c)apart from looking pretty they serve no real purpose, unless your DD is probe to whacking their head against the cot bars. They are also just another thing you'll have to wash when your DC projectile voms all over their bedding!

That said, it sounds like your sister is over-reacting. It's not like you bought the baby a chainsaw Smile

Cot bumpers have neither good or bad effects re: SIDS. From the SIDS website:

Bumpers: there are cot bumpers in the cot. In the past, there were concerns that bumpers might make babies too hot, increasing the risk of cot death. However, research has shown that they have neither good nor bad effects. Take it out when your baby can get up on her hands and knees so she can?t climb out. Make sure there are no trailing strings or ties.

I do hope your baby appreciates all the new stuff.

We always had a cot bumper because DS would poke his arms through the cot bars and wake up otherwise. It tied on very securely in several places around the top end of the cot so I was never worried that he'd get tangled in it. Can't see how covering one end of a cot makes the contents any hotter than a headboard on a regular bed Hmm. He actually got rather fond of the washing instruction label on one corner of the cot bumper and would stroke it between his fingers before going to sleep. When he moved into a bed I had to unpick the label and sew it on a blanket so that he could keep doing it!!!

octaviapink.........so do I,its our first and will be the baby 2nd baby in our family in 7 months from 6 years ago so unfortantley no hand me downs..........its expensive,I think its mainly for me,its not like a baby will be scared for life if they havnt got curtains. But hey it makes it seem well......more real.

Thankyou ladies.shall have a read and make my mind up what to do.

We've got an Airwrap bumper, its made of mesh and attaches with velcro not ties. Wouldn't have bothered but DT1 keeps getting her legs stuck in the bars, even in a sleeping bag.
