How much do you spend per month on children's activities?

I've always thought my DC (8 & 10 yo) don't do that many outside things but we spend:

Cubs/Scouts (weekly) £15pm each
Swimming club £18pm each
Wildlife rangers (monthly) £3 each
Tri-club (weekly) £8pm each

So, that's £88 per month, between them, out of the household expenditure.

Neither are particular keen on ball sports, so the swimming and tri are pretty much their only exercise (although active in other ways at scouts etc too)

They'd both like to join a children's club at the climbing wall, but that's another £88pm between them. It's not that we couldn't afford it, but £90 pm does make a difference to us and I'm balking at the total cost of their activities. At the same time, I do like to know they're being active and social and I guess talented sports or musical children cost their parents more?!

Don't want to add it up as that seems a lot now I've written it down! We have tiny house, small mortgage and no social life or big holidays!!

gymnastics x 2 = 2 x £42.00 every 8 weeks
swimming x 2 = 2 x £19 per month
football x 1 = £40 every 10 weeks for ds
dance club x 1 = free afterschool club for dd

WittyTitle · 03/03/2012 20:44

Son: cubs £15, percussion £40, Cricket £10, karate £10
Daughter: rainbows £17, violin £42, gymnastics £40, dance (ballet/Tap) £56

Hulababy · 03/03/2012 20:44

It always sounds so scary if you add it up. DD is 9y:

LAMDA (via school's afterschool club) approx £5 a week inc exam, term time only
Drama (out of school) £3.50 a week, term time only
Drama (afterschool club) - free, yeah!
Climbing - £13 once a fortnight, all year round - we restrict to fortnightly as gets too much otherwise
Singing lessons - £15 a week, term time only plus however much exam is going to cost me soon

So about £100 a month over the year - ouch! Good job we only have the one!

Seona1973 · 03/03/2012 20:44

sorry, gymnastics is 2 x £21.00 every 8 weeks

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 03/03/2012 20:51

thinneratforty · 03/03/2012 21:06

Dance club £54 per term
Brownies £20 per term
Drama club - free
Not too bad, but wants to start the violin.
DD2 very cheap - doesn't like clubs/groups/activities at all!

Meglet · 03/03/2012 21:15

DS Swimming £23
DS After school activity £16
DD Toddler music £24
DD Toddler 'aerobic' session £8

£71 a month. TBH, I knew it was that much as I was trying to figure out where my money was going last week.

We haven't even quite got to the Rainbows / Beavers / rugby stage yet. DD will eventually swop music for swimming though.

Marne · 03/03/2012 21:18

Dd1 only does piano which costs me around £80 per term, she used to do brownies but we couldn't afford both so she chose piano.

pchick · 03/03/2012 21:26

Tennis - £80 per month
Football - £20 per month
Guitar - £40 per month

Total for 2 children = £140 per month

I don't know how some people can afford to do lts of clubs everyday, especially when they have several children.

Lilyloo · 03/03/2012 21:33

God, that's £300!

Think that works out at £202 (but have had wine) per month for 4 children......good job I've had the wine Grin

TheCunningStunt · 03/03/2012 21:44

£72.40 a month. That includes weekly swimming lessons for DS, a dance class and a 30 min private swimming lesson and a dance class for dd.

sphil · 03/03/2012 21:44

DS1 clarinet £8 per lesson
1:1 swimming £8 per lesson
Drama £8 per lesson - so £24 per week, £96 per month

He also does some holiday things - this Easter is doing a caving day, £22, and a four day Drama workshop which is costing (eek) £90.

Ds2 doesnt do any clubs ( he is severely autistic ) though I'm crossing my fingers that an SEN trampolining club will start up soon.
