I wouldn't have done that. When DD was little she always slept in the car, but there was no way I would have left her on her own outside a supermarket. I used to get the pram out, unfold it and pop her in it. She might have woken up for a short while, but used to fall asleep almost straight away. I didn't have one of these "travel systems" as I don't think keeping a baby in a car seat is good for the baby.

That happened near her -a 3monthish baby and a 2yr oldish... But that 2yr old was crying out for her mum. I was parked near and heard it go on for ages before i realised they were in the car alone! Lots of heads turning and gossiping as tgey walked past the car but no one doing anything, so i grabbed the security guy who took the number plate and said he'd read out in store and would stay with the car... Not sure if he tried to talk to the girl or not, she was in such a state!

Some people really are crazy

her bf had gone to find me so she was in the car with her lil one and he was asleep so she could not get out

Could be 'worse' i guess... I hear sooo many stories of the (usually previous) generation leaving their brand new DCs outside the shops and forgetting, walking all the way home without them! Maybe this one was someone on autopilot... Daaamn how bad would you feel if that happened?!

matana · 03/03/2012 20:16

My dad left me in a store when i was a baby. Got half way home before he realised he'd forgotten me. When he returned i was sat there just looking around sucking my thumb.

My DH forgot my DS was in the car (asleep) when he popped into the corner shop on his way home from work (via the CM). When he returned DS was still fast asleep none the wiser. It took my DH the best part of a week before he would own up to me!

So i suppose what i'm saying is accidents happen. But no, i would not deliberately leave my DS in the car asleep while i went shopping.

But i have (deliberately) left my DS in the car for 2 mins while i've paid at the petrol station kiosk. The car was locked, in sight and only a few metres away, and my DS was over a year old then. Does that make me a bad mum?

SpottyTeacakes · 03/03/2012 20:23

matana I always leave dd in the car when I pay for petrol, always have done and she is now 20 months old

this is a slow burner Grin

Well I will throw my hat in the ring - I have religiously taken DD with when going into shops. I live in a small villiage with the shops all on one short street and I park the car right outside the shop. However more recently I have left her locked in the car if I am literally going to be in and out. Any longer than that and I take her with me. I can see her from the shop. BUT I had agonies about whether this was acceptable or not. (hunkers down behind the barricade )

RoverJones · 04/03/2012 00:21

My dad left me in the car every time that he went shopping. He would never be gone more than an hour and it never really gets too hot in Scotland. I would never leave dcs in the car at the supermarket. I do when popping into the corner shop or petrol station as long as my 5 yo ds is there.

Octaviapink · 04/03/2012 08:15

I'd have called the police.

Iwantcandy · 04/03/2012 08:29

I think alerting the store security is the right thing to do. You don't know whether it was deliberate or not. There was a guy last year (I think in Austria but can't quite remember) who forgot to drop his dd off at nursery on the way to work and she died in the car because she overheated last summer. So sad. I always wondered if his wife could ever forgive him...

JeelyPiece · 04/03/2012 08:34

You should have phoned the police.

Shock at leaving your child in the car for an hour while you do the shopping!
