10 month old standing up in the bath

DD has recently learnt to stand, and now bath times are a nightmare. She constantly tried to stand up, which of course ends up with falls etc.

She was in one of those bath seats until about a month ago but now she is just in the bath with a rubber shower mat. I dont really want to put her back in a bath seat unless I really have to.

Any tips? Will this pass?

I think it's probably too early to remove bath seat. My 9 month old has only started using it in the last month or so ( held in arms before), 2 year old just been evacuated for brother but still asks to go in if bathing alone

Grin and bear it, it will get better. My lo refused to sit down in the bath for ages, I just used to wash him down when he was standing. Some new toys got him to sit in the end. He was a bit older than 10 months though.

I put 2 mats in so they covered the length of the bath.

My DS is 10 months and does this too. We've also stopped using the bath seat as he hated it, but have started showering him instead of the bath, he absolutely loves it and trying to grab the water out of the shower head keeps him amused and distracted from trying to climb, most of the time anyway!

We've never had a bath seat. DS started pulling up to stand at 8mo and did it in the bath, with a couple of slips. I did feel slightly worried because it's an iron bath, but he still has all his teeth . I decided that I wanted him to learn to assess risk and that a few bumps would probably be the price. He's now 14mo and only just through the phase of holding on to the handles either side of the bath and then purposely skidding around. And screeching with laughter. But he is through it, and he is noticably careful when moving round the bath.

We never had a seat, ds now 20mo just laid/sat and learnt not to stand. Just tell them off and after 2or3 times threaten to take them out, and follow through. They understand well enough.

They will grow put of it - my ds only had a bath support as a new born and then straight to bath mat. He used to stand all the time but now is happy to sit and play with toys or splash his legs like a nut case.

HappyCamel · 02/03/2012 22:44

Dd does this too, I'm in the bath playing with her so i can catch her. But then I've always bathed with her.

We have the same problem with my 10 mo. Tried getting new toys and mostly that works. DH also lays him down sometimes and he seems to quite like that, and will lay really still and just look up at whoever is bathing him! Otherwise showers work well.

Have never used a seat either. Ds2 is 23 months and still does it occasionally but not as much as he used to. Now he understands 'sit down' and does listen. When he was younger I used to have to sit on the bath mat right next to the bath in case he slipped. Toys also good for distraction, or a jug to pour water is popular here!

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 03/03/2012 14:59

DS has done that since he could stand. I find it quite handy, much easier to wash his bum when he is standing. What is a bath seat?

Iggly · 03/03/2012 15:10

Dh bathed with DS so not an issue. Now he's older we tell him to get on his knees which he does. You can also get extra long bath mats.

Dd went through this at a similar age and eventually stopped. We started off quite relaxed about it but one evening she almost fell out of the bath and we adopted a zero-tolerance approach after that! Every time she stood up we would say "sit down" and then sit her back down. Some bathtimes were cut short if she persisted but she never does it any more.

Natzer · 04/03/2012 17:49

Thank you, we will just have to be tough and say no and tell her to sit down. Otherwise it will end in tears!

DS has been doing this but I've found he loves being on his front on hands and knees, so I let him bath in this position and support him across the front of his shoulders, wash him as best I can and then sit him up to wash his face and bits properly.
