Reins tantrums

My almost 15 month old DD is now walking quite confidently and I want to encourage her to walk short distances wherever possible with the use of reins. I have been trying them on her at home but every time I put them on she has a massive paddy and refuses to even stand on her feet never mind walk, any ideas how I can make them more acceptable to her? They are just basic reins but I would consider paying for a set of backpack ones if anyone else has found these to be a success where normal reins have failed.

Mine hated any kind of reins including the backpack ones
I'd keep her inthe pushchair until she can get to a park to run around safely

MiL puts them on the coat first and then when you put the coat on to go outdoors it's already on and they don't fuss as much. It's just a case of clicking it together at the front when you do up the coat.

Could you put the harness on her but without the reins attached quite a while before you need to go out, and just sit out her paddy then try to get her back to playing happily? Then once you're ready to go out clip on the reins. If she's used to wearing them around the house it might become a bit more normal to her and not tantrum-worthy. Or it might not Grin .

We didn't get reins but did get a back pack thing for ds when he was little. He really liked it as he could pick some of his toys and take them with him. Plus he couldn't hang off the back pack in the same way you can hang off reins when they decide they don't want to do something.

Putting them on the coat first sounds like a good idea, wish I could just put the harness on her and let her get used to it but unfortunately the reins don't detach from the harness on mine bloody Tommee Tippee. Next time I am in toys r us I might try some of the backpack ones on her to see the reaction before buying them and be prepared to make a sharp exit if a tantrum occurs.
