First aid kit!

So my daughter is running around the park now and walking down the street. She obviously falls over now and again and has grazes on her knees!

Other than calpol etc for teething etc we have no first aid things. So...what do you all think is essesntial to have? Plasters, antiseptic wipes?, cream? Any/all of these things?

Thanks!

Plasters - assorted sizes
Alcohol-free wipes are useful, and don't sting
Antiseptic cream - eg Savlon
I find bigger adhesive dressings are useful too, for grazes, as they cover a much bigger area before they get to the sticky part
I also have assorted dressings and bandages, including one for fingers, and an eye patch - but those are more because I've done a first-aid course and felt I ought to have some supplies at home and in the car in case I could actually help someone!

I would recommend doing a first aid course for children if you can find one, as you'd then know what to do if something bad happened, like choking for instance.

Well here's the embarrassing thing - I have done a first aid course, a few actually as before I had my daughter I worked with children. But there are things in schools you're not allowed to use (eg alcohol wipes, though that may hve been because we had a couple of children with allergies) so I was wondering what's the basics as a Mum rather than at work. I hope that makes sense!

Grin it's different when you're a parent isn't it? Wipes/plasters/cream will get you through most of what they do to themselves on a regular basis. A good old triangular bandage is probably worth having round too, for supporting arms, covering burns, and generally making them feel that you've "done something" which will make them feel better without the Calpol...

Thankyou! I've got a little stock of things now! Sorry for the totally stupid question!

I swear by savlon wound wash for grazed knees. It washes all the grit out without you having to touch the graze and doesn't sting. Can I also suggest bite/sting spray? Or is it just my dcs who could find a nettle in a sandpit?

Bite/sting spray added to the list, thanks trice. I'll look at the wound wash stuff too!

I'd get the Elastoplast spray - doesn't come off in the bath like plasters do!

On my first aid course we were taught not to use antiseptic cream on children because it's so strong it basically kills the skin around the wound (including the new skin the body's trying to make) and can make the wound far more unpleasant. He was an ambulance driver/paramedic and said that simple washing with water then a plain dressing is best for most cuts.
