Boys - does everyone start them sitting down?

Weeing that is. I have met one woman who started hers standing up but that wouldn't that be a bit back breaking when out and about?

Have no experience yet myself just noticed that the books I was browsing didn't really mention it.

5{ down. A boy needs to learn to push his willy downwards as well, otherwise you get various interesting water effects spilling over the rim of the potty.

You might also like to contemplate that in the early days of potty training they can't always distinguish between letting out a wee and letting out a poo. Not a mistake you'd want him to be making while standing up...

Don't know what that 5{ was about. Should read: Sitting down, obviously.

Sitting down. Cos part of the training process for DS was sitting him on the potty when I thought he might need to do a wee. You can keep them sat on a potty longer than you can keep them stood at a toilet. And I agree with frogs re wees v. poos.

codnotmud · 28/01/2006 21:51

yes

poppiesinaline · 28/01/2006 22:11

yep, sitting down

skerriesmum · 28/01/2006 22:30

Actually we're training ds now and he does his wees standing up! He's modelled on dh, they do "wee wee races" together etc. Also he's quite tall so he can wee either into the toilet or into his potty. I think the toilets are lower in Canada though.

yoyo · 28/01/2006 22:33

Yes, sitting down. DS has recently started pre-school where they have the little toilets and he insists on standing up put forgets to point. Frequently bring him home in "spare clothes".

TinyGang · 28/01/2006 22:55

Yes, to start with.

I got in a bit of a tis about this as I was potty training boy and girl twins. I thought it'd get confusing to have them doing different things though and we began all sitting.

Ds very quickly cottoned on to what other boys did once he started pre-school.

Nemo1977 · 28/01/2006 22:59

I tried to start ds sitting down but he was having none of it. He is 2.3yrs and kept telling me he wee wee like daddy...grr..pmsl IT made for a lot of fun while he was learning on the potty as his aim was rubbish. however now only 3wks on and he is using the toilet standing up and is really good at it. plus he will do duel weeing n pooping with pushing willy down as he is used to aiming.[tmi]

we trained ds1 sitting down. was easier and dryer they sit down at playgroup too. there are a few of his freinds who have kearned standing first but they have older brothers they copy from

JR1980 · 29/01/2006 14:05

I have a 21mth old at what age roughly should i start potty training.. i thought that maybe he would give me a sign.. not sure tho help please//

Lonelymum · 29/01/2006 14:11

I started them sitting down, but then 2 out of my 3 boys have/had hypospadias (a deformity of the opening of the urethra) and so standing up wasn't really an option. Ds1 didn't stand to wee until he had corrctive surgery, ds2 (born without hypospadias) still sometimes prefers to sit to wee (now 8) and ds3, potty trained 5 months ago, really will have to sit until he has his op (in about 2 years) as, even sitting, the wee goes everywhere!

JR1980, it depends on the child. None of my 4 children showed any signs of wanting to use the potty so they were either 3 or getting on for it before I started training, apart from ds3 who I trained at 2.6 so he could go to playgroup.

Nemo1977 · 29/01/2006 14:11

jr personally would say 21mths is too young. MY son was showing signs of being ready by going on the potty when bare bottomed or before a bath etc but I have only just potty trained him he was 26mths when i started. It was probably easier as he grasped it really quickly and was generally accident free within 5 days.

JR1980 · 29/01/2006 17:08

Thats all good advice thanks any more would be welcome Didnt have a clue

Bozza · 29/01/2006 22:08

JR my DD is 20 months and showing signs of being ready but I would suggest that you wait until the spring - it's easier in the better weather - no vests with poppers etc. DD will be trained shortly after she moves up into the next room at nursery where they are more geared for that kind of thing.

I started mine sitting down as it was easier......especially for toilet training at night which i employed a lifting technique just before i went to bed, he was still half asleep and i coaxed a wee out of him, whispering to him 'do a big wee wee for mummy', it never failed and he never really woke up enough to stand and support himself so sitting was ideal. When he first stood up to do a wee, we was on holiday and i was so proud telling my friend who came with us to the amuzement of all the other sunbathers... but it was such a 'big boy' transition i couldn't help but praise him for his acheivement!
