DD fell out of the big girls bed last night

I have see the other post about this, but our situation is slightly different.

She is 2yr 4 months and she loves the big bed in her room. Its actually a bed, not a cot bed, and the frame is metal (I know we never realised!) so can't put a guard. Mother in law suggested a pilow on the side, she has 5 children and neither fell (I now think that probably she doesn't remeber). So in she went all happy (I put her in her sleeping bag because she still doesn't know how to cover herself with the duvet), put a pillow under the fitted sheet and she fell sleep instantly. At 1am I hear this thump! and went to her room and she was still sleep on the floor (first afternoon at nursery and she was shattered but she won't go everyday)! She seems to have rolled over the pillow on the side, so I put her back in the cot.

I'd love to leave her in the cot for a bit longer, but she demands to sleep in the big bed!

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!!

We just have a folded up duvet on the floor for DS to crash onto (he still does after nearly a year, but rarely wakes), but it is from a low bed. Could you use the old cot mattress as a crash mat?

If you want guards, what about something like these
Never used them, but like other products from hippychick.

RodentOfUnusualSize · 29/02/2012 08:44

hi Kione, my DD is the same age and we use a foam wedge thingy instead of a guard. It works really well. I bought this one in NZ but I am sure that you could get one in the UK too.

Kione · 29/02/2012 08:51

Hi, I thought of the foam wedge, but is it hard? As in, I can't help but think that she might be able to roll over it too.

I am putting the cot mattress as a crsh mat yes, thats what I thought last night after putting her back in the cot. But I am not totally happy if she doesn't stop falling as it is a normal bed, not too high, but still quite a distance specially if she falls after rolling over the pillow!

No the wedge is not hard but it is firm, if that makes sense. Our DD is very wriggly and she hasn't rolled over it yet.

Kione · 29/02/2012 08:54

Ok, I have seen them on ebay, its not toon expensive anyway if it doesn't work. But hopefully will!

nextphase, I think those are the same idea as to the foam wedge, we only need one side covered so will go with the wedge. But thanks!

We use a duvet across widthways, so you can tuck it in both sides. A bit like a gigantic sleeping bag.

Kione · 29/02/2012 09:22

LittleMissGoodEnough: Aaaah thats a very good idea too :) but she is very wrigly, I will try that tonight but not sure if she will be too happy not being able to move around as she does, but I guess she will have to get used not too!

Thanks for all the suggestions!!

Has anyone seen anything like this in the UK?

Its like a fitted sheet and a sleeping bag all in one. So you put the sheet and then the toddler inside and the duvet on top to keep them warm. It is very elastic, they show on the videos a toddler jumping on the bed. My spanish friends recommend it.

What do you think?

Agree with putting the cot mattress on the floor like a crash mat. sOme children are just wriggly. ds (my dc1) fell out of bed on a regular basis until he was about 10 and too big for me to lift back, at which point I'd just put his quilt over him on the floor. He never hurt himself.
Was also going to suggest the putting the quilt across the bed and tucking it in thing. Smile

Ds2 fell out from time to time. We just laid a duvet on the floor and picked him up if we knew he'd fallen. More often than not he didn't even wake up when he fell.

He was only about 2 whey he went in a bed because he climbed out of his cot.

ReallyTired · 29/02/2012 16:16

We put an armchair next to ds's bed when he was two. It acted like a bed guard.

The big bed bumper looks good.

SandStorm · 29/02/2012 16:18

DD2 fell out nearly every night for the first couple of months. It was the same time every night - you could almost set your watch by it. 10pm we would hear a thump from upstairs as she rolled out of bed and onto the cot mattress strategically positioned to catch her. Often she would have put herself back into bed by the time one of us got upstairs and I wonder if she was actually awake when she did it.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 29/02/2012 16:18

My son's 12 and he still falls out of his bed. Sad He's now in a cabin bed as it has high sides, he's fallen off it twice now though. He's currently off school as he fell off it again on Monday and has hurt his shoulder. Hmm

Putting something on the floor seems like a good plan. If she's still asleep then leave her on the floor.

arfur · 29/02/2012 16:23

Hi - google travel bed guards - Lindam and baby dan and safety 1st do them I think - we used to have one and they work on any type of bed. It just pushes in under the mattress. Also try not to worry about her falling too much - she is unlikely to hurt herself especially with a mattress to land on, shell soon get used to it!

Kione · 29/02/2012 16:26

I thought of putting the cot next to the bed as it is higher, but I was looking forward to take it out of the bredroom and arrange this slightly so its much nicer.

Ok, I think I will go with the cot mattress on the floor tonight. See if she can learn by herself. If she still does it we will have to buy the bumpers.

CustardIsMyNemesis · 29/02/2012 16:28

The Gro company makes something like the thing your Spanish friend recommended here It is an integrated bedding system that stops children falling out of bed. We looked at one for DD as she was a wriggler, however the transision from cot to bed seemed to stop her nighttime movements for us so we never needed to buy one.

PastGrace · 29/02/2012 16:31

My mum used to put a little wall of dining chairs up against my bed when I was small - you put them like you are tucking them under the bed (if that makes sense) and depending on height they either form a raised barrier or you just roll onto the chairs instead of the floor - the backs stop you rolling off the chairs.

Kione · 29/02/2012 16:33

arfur, thanks, my friend just told me that she has some of those, so I'll keep them in mind if she keeps falling.

Same for you CustardIsMyNemesis, thanks a lot. I just think these sheets are great because you can take them to sleepovers or on holiday. She is actually going to stay at my sister in laws for a nigh in may and their bed is much higher! So if she hasn't leared by then we eill have to buy these sheets or bumpers or something.

Well, she didn't fall last night :) but we'll see tonight because she is going to nursery in the afternoon and she moves alot more when she is tired.

Its a starnge feeling, I know she loves the big bed, but I am so upset that she is growing up!

Needingsomeadvice · 01/03/2012 08:31

We have something like this. It works really well as DD (26 months) was falling out several times a night despite having a little guard at the top of her toddler bed. Would recommend it. I got mine from Amazon I think.

conorsrockers · 01/03/2012 10:01

Don't feel bad - we have had falls out of the top bunk over the years - they are all still alive, no permanent damage done, I think Wink It's such a short way to fall and the fact she slept through it says it all!!

Jojay · 01/03/2012 10:06

It's a learning curve they have to go through at some point. I'd put the cot mattress on the floor and let her get on with it. Bed guards just delay the inevitable ime. She'll be fine.

Kione · 02/03/2012 21:27

She hasn't fallen again, but she comes out of the bed if she is not in her sleeping bag . More complicated than I thought!

Oh well, one step at a time. She is in the big bed, with a pillow tucked on the side, in her sleeping bad, with the cot mattress on the floor next to her. I am not sure this is going forward really!
