What age did you starting using products when bathing your baby? My DD is now 8wks and apart from 1 time against my own gut feeling, I've only ever used water to bathe her. She had bad dry skin for a long time and both HV and MW told me not to use any products on her. It's finally starting to clear so i was thinking of getting some fragrance free burts bees or something similar which isn't too harsh. What do you all use and when did you start to use it? I should say also that although her dry skin has all but cleared she still has cradle cap.

Heyy my little girl was born with very dry skin it would really peel and flake, mw said to only bath her in plain water until she was at least 6 weeks.. I then went on to bath her in the body shops baby range, it was so gentle.. I still use it now and shes 2 as the product are so lovely and kind to skin! X

I'd put oilatum in the bath and not use any products, try not to bath everyday, they don't need it and the water is very drying -
Cradle crap - just pick it off when they are on your lap. It's the only way. If it feels a bit tough to pick, rub in some baby oil. Have fun!!!

Cradle cap is just a build up of dry skin so just apply plenty of oil (we've used grapeseed oil). My son was born two weeks late so shed skin like a lizard, used grapeseed oil after bathing but have used Johnsons babybath in the water, combination of both has done the trick. I wouldn't spend loads of money on "fancy" products like burts bees unless you've got it to burn!!

DD2 has really bad eczema and cradle cap. We used just plain water for a long time, then Oilatum.

We ended up seeing a paediatrician and now use something called Dermol every day for the bath, and slather Epaderm as an emollient a few times a day until she turns into a "grease ball". Her skin has totally cleared up and cradle cap is almost gone!

I found Dentinox really good for cradle cap, as well as olive oil on his head. He was 4 months when I started using it though.
And it smells really nice, like Turkish delight!

Hello, my 1st DD (now aged 5yrs) suffered with dry skin as a baby and went on to develop severe eczema at aged 2yrs. We stopped using bath products and was also prescribed Dermol 600, with Dermol 500 as her soap. We still use this for her and her 2 younger sisters.

Our second daughter had no skin conditions at all and we were able to bathe her in Johnsons - or Tesco's own baby lavender bath is lovely! And our youngest (aged 5mths) we used to bathe in Tesco's own but recently noticed patches of dry skin on her legs so have switched back to Dermol. Baby also had cradle cap and have been prescribed the foulest smelling cradle cap shampoo which I use once a week, but also just pick off the loose bts as they grow out. Its not causing her any irritation.

If you want to use bath products your baby is old enough nw, but I would advice using sensative products if baby has dry skin to avoid irritation.

Dermol is quite expensive to buy, so would recommend getting it on prescription if your GP will do that for you Smile

We started using products at 8 weeks old. I hated Johnson's it makes my eyes and throat itch so I use Simple for babies and bathe her every 2 days. I use Dentinox for her cradle cap when washing her hair and put vaseline on her head as well (really sticky and hard to wash off but actually does clear it up, olive oil didn't work at all).

I just left cradle cap alone on DD and one day just sort of noticed she didn't have it any more. Its not harmful and picking at it can create problems if its not ready to come away.

conorsrockers · 26/02/2012 19:20

You are lucky trixie - I left my DS1 and didn't touch it (although everyone told me to pick it off - I thought it was gross!) and he is 9 now and I can still see it on his scalp!!! Picked away at the other two and they are fine. When I say pick I mean gently remove bits that are flaky not take a scalpel to it Smile.
