My ds struggles to hear verbal questions and appears to not be able to process the information in order to produce a coherent answer thanks

I know a couple of children who have something similar to this - I think with them it is a language processing problem, but one of them also has an auditory processing problem which compounds the difficulty. I don't know how old your ds is but if it were me I think I would take him to an educational psychologist, try and get a recommendation for a good one near you - I am not in the UK so can't help if you are, sorry. The auditory processing can be determined by a neurodevelopmental therapist with an audiogram. (nb it's not a hearing problem - his hearing could be fine.)

If it were me that's what I'd do - but am not qualified in this area - hope of some help, best of luck.

Hi Gothic
I'm no expert (there are some experts salts on mn) but there are a number of reasons why your son may be struggling all with various names & i'm guessing it would be impossible for even an expert to dx online.

But some useful strategies are (sorry if i'm teaching you to suck eggs)
Shorten instructions/sentences removing any additional uneeded words.
Look & make sure you ahve his attention when speaking
Give him lots of time to process the question & answer.... dont jump in with more prompts... this is often just more info/language to be processed.
Support the spoken word with visual prompts, simple signs, symbols pictures etc.

How old is your son? Have you sought professional advice? What do school say?
You could try posting this in the SN sections (children with disabilities) not suggesting that your ds has any SN but there are some very knowledable parents that post on there & are more likely to get positive answers.

Just to add previous replies my son has language processing problem and we have found visual prompts a huge help and probably obvious but calling his name before asking / talking to, especially important at school as assuming your DS school age, the teacher usually asks generic questions and helped enormously by just starting with his name.

Thank you for your reply I will check with his teacher
