DD tired and crying

DD, 8mths, is wanting to sleep an awful lot (about 5 hours a day) and is crying for long periods of time. She has no temperature, has just cut 2 teeth so I'm pretty sure it's not teething, she has a great appetite, I'm sure she's not ill.

Anyone experienced this???

BTW - to those who have helped me out recently with advice, thank you and yes, I am quite paranoid and I need help on a nearly daily basis. I am on my own here, no family or friends with kids, MN is my only resource for the rollercoaster of parenting! So please bear with me...

Can't help I'm afraid cos I'm no expert. However, DS is 8 mths and is crying more lately which I put down to going through a 'clingy phase' and also he is more fussy now about which toys he likes and food he likes so seems to cry because he doesn't always get what he wants. He is only sleeping for about 2.5 hrs per day but babies do seem to vary on how much sleep they want. Whenever I've worried about his health my GP always says if he looks healthy, is eating well, is pooing well, they he almost certainly is well.

She's not pooing well. Got advice on the Health page about this but I don't think this could be making her so tired. I can't keep her awake.

Yesterday as an example she had her morning nap for 45 mins but I had to wake her, then fell asleep half an hour early for her lunch time nap and slept for nearly 2.5 hours then had her tea at 5pm and cried solidly until 6pm and fell asleep in my shoulder on and off til bedtime at 7pm.
Last night she woke crying twice.
Considering she has hardly ever cried since she was born unless something was badly wrong, I am worried. Sorry if I sound paranoid, I am.

Teeth can go in odd spurts. "Teething" just seems to be an ongoing process as far as I can make out! Is it worth trying some Calpol - if she is in pain, it will make her feel better.

You know your baby best though, so if you are concerned contact your hv/gp?

Sadeyedladyofthelowlands · 26/01/2006 12:46

I live in Ireland and it seems to be less straight forward here. I've contacted my public health nurse (Irish HV) before about concerns I've had and she's been a bit off with me talking about her work load and how dd is 8months now and she has newborns every day to tend to etc and seeing a GP in Ireland costs E45 everytime you go and since myself and dd have both been poorly alot over this winter I've spent over E300 on doctors fees, hense my very frequent posing on MN for advice b4 I take her to be checked out!!

ds would happily sleep 4-5 hrs a day at this age. He had a nap of 1-1.5 hrs in the morning, 2-2.5 hrs at lunchtime and sometimes a short 45 min nap in the late afternoon though I think by 8 months he had dropped this one and he was still in bed for the night at 5.30-6.00pm some evenings. In fact I never managed to keep ds up until 7pm until he was about a year old. I was always trying to as he slept really badly from about 11pm to 7am (great hah)

He also cried a lot at this age. Sometimes I thought I'd go mad. I must have visited the doctor to check on his ears, throat etc, 10 times in a couple of months. He was fine in the end though nothing physical wrong with him.

We did move to the U.S. for 6 months when he was 10 weeks old and came back when he was 8 months. looking back he was really unsettled for 2-3 months after we arrived in the US and about a month when we came home. I think it was the change in place/routine along with the fact that I found it really hard in the US on my own and I got quite depressed. I think this affected him a bit.

How is DD today? Hope you have had a better day.

ShaysMummy · 27/01/2006 22:02

if mine wont stop crying i take him to doc. last time it was ear infection. he never pulled it or anything so i had no idea. he had no temperature with that either, just wanted to sleep.

Sadeyedladyofthelowlands · 28/01/2006 07:31

She's crying less but still not right and gone to the other extreme for sleep, she's not settling long for naps and she's waking up wanting cuddles 3-4 times a night which she has never done. She wont settle until she's on me or in my bed and even then she's very restless and waking up moaning or crying.

Took her for baby jabs yesterday but she had a slight temerature and the nurse wouldn't do it.
Don't know what to do for the best. She's in quite good form most of the time and has a grand appetite. She's a bit of a mystery.

Thankyou cathcat for asking!

Crying is exhausting - when I cry all I want to do is sleep.

When ds is ill he sleeps a lot.

Just keep an eye out for another couple of days for a worse temperature.

Twiglett · 28/01/2006 07:59

stop waking her up .. let her sleep as much as she wants to .. its probably a growth spurt latched on to a developmental surge as she realises she's separate from you

Sadeyedladyofthelowlands · 28/01/2006 08:41

I only woke her once last week cos she'd normally only have a half hr nap from 9 to half 9 and I'd arranged to meet a friend in town and had to get her in her car seat!
Normally wouldn't wake her at all.
She's grand this morning but only had about 7hrs sleep last nite, (I only got 4) and woke up at 6:30 crying again, she was in my bed so can't be separation anxiety!
