Baby sleeps a LOT

Hi all,

My son of 8 weeks old (he's a big baby of almost a stone!) used to sleep 4 to 5 hours during the night in between feeds (I am breastfeeding). Yesterday he slept from 19.30 till 03.00 and last night he slept from 18.30 til 04.40!! What a pleasant surprise for mum and dad! I think it is okay, but today he slept a lot as well. He is only awake for an hour and then falls asleep again. He is happy, smiling and goo-ing and gaa-ing when he is awake.

How long can a chubby 8 week old baby go without feeding?? Is it okay to let him sleep so much during the night or should I wake him up? And when?

Funny; last week I was almost begging for him to sleep a lot and now that he does, I am worried LOLGrin

Some newborns do sleep a lot. One hour between waking an going back to sleep seems normal. That awake period will get longer and longer as he gets older.

Make the most of it. It'll probably all go to pot when he reaches the 16week growth spurt.

Oh and if he's having lots of wet and dirty nappies then don't worry about waking him up to feed. It sounds like he's happy and content and will let you know when he's hungry.

My girls are 8 weeks old and weigh 8lb 7 and sleep 6:30pm-4:00am then feed then till 8am :)

Just consider your self lucky I do!

Also babies this age can only stay awake fr hour and half at most and then they become ratty and over tired so he is doing perfect!! I put mine down after a hour and 15 mins awake .. You are doing well.

my DD is 7 weeks and has been sleeping between 8-10hrs at night since 4.5wks. I was also worried at first but she got weighed at 6wks and had put on 2lb in 3 weeks with plenty of wet and dirty nappies as well, HV said it was fine and not to wake her. When she wakes in the morning, she then stays awake for approx 1.5-2hrs before dropping off again.

Don't worry! As long as he is feeding well, having wet and dirty nappies and is alert between sleeps then he is probably fine.

My DS slept for 4-5 hours from newborn, he was a big baby, but the midwife kept telling me to wake him even though but he was feeding really well (bf) and gaining weight. At 4yrs he still loves his sleep - fingers crossed.

I always joke that i didn't even know the colour of my DS's eyes for at least a week because he slept so much. And after that he slept an awful lot as well. I would just go on the theory that if he's happy and putting on weight, enjoy it!

DS is now a very active, healthy toddler of 15 months but he still sleeps more than many 15 month olds i know - 12 hours at night, 2-3 during the day!

I don't mean to upset anyone with this but... Myself and my partner haven't had a disturbed nights sleep since our DD was born and she is now 7 months old! She was 10lb 1.5oz when she was born and the first night we took her home she slept all the way through, we then set an alarm for the next 2 nights but she was so difficult to wake up (not in a worrying sense) we decided after 2 nights of alarm setting we would just leave her to wake up knowing she would let us know if she needed anything! She would and still does sometimes sleep until the afternoon and have a 1-2 hour sleep in the day - sometimes 2 naps!! and has always had at least 12 hours solid sleep.
My mum has got used to it now but for ages she would say 'aren't you worried about her?!' HV said it's fine and we're just very lucky.
I agree with others who have replied, just relax, enjoy and make the most of it! We find ourselves waiting for it all too change as we've had it too easy so far! If baby's happy and sleeping well, you'll be happy and more relaxed. Everybody wins! :o
