Why use a toddler bed not a normal single bed?

Hmm . We've been offered from family a free toddler bed (just need to buy a mattress for it). We have a single bed in the spare room we were going to in time move to DDs room (no urgency).

Just wondered what the purpose of having a toddler bed is and why people don't go straight to a single bed [clueless] as we arn't sure whether to take up the offer or stick to our initial idea of going straight to big bed

Will your DD be able to climb into the single bed? We're about to move DD into a bed (DC2 is due soon & will take the cotbed) and anticipate her relishing her freedom in the first few weeks. I think that that will be easier to deal with if she can actually get back into bed herself rather than one of us having to go & put her in. With that in mind, I took her to our local bed shop today & let her have a go at climbing into various single beds. We ended up choosing a wooden one with an end to it as then she could use the wooden frame as a step & hold onto the end and scramble up that way. With a divan style one, there was nothing to help her. She quickly learned that she had to push the duvet to one side to climb up as otherwise it was too slippery. In the shop, she then ducked under the duvet whilst still at the foot of the bed & wriggled up to the other end under the duvet - only to emerge looking very pleased with herself, do a victory roll & land on the floor!
I had considered getting a toddler bed as you can get them very cheaply and she could use her existing cotbed mattress (we'll be getting a new mattress for DC2) but as DC2's arrival means we'll be losing a spare room, having a proper single bed in DD's room does give us some more flexibility when we have guests.

i think theyre a manfacturing con. if its a small bed u need becaue of the room size better to go for extending sngle beds, so as they grow u extend the bed to a full single size, without extending ur wallet i.e ikea does such a product

or if space no issue a fully sized single and get some bed guards fitted if youre afraid they may fall.

both my kids had normal single beds i was thinking of guards but theyve never fallen, and my parents always said they raises 7 kids no guards no damage done to my brain least i think...

I have no idea what toddler beds are for, at some point they'll out grow them so why buy twice when you can just buy a sinle bed from the start.

My LO went straight from cotbed to single bed, has a rail on the side and a step down the end, has never fallen out and gets himself in and out

I also find that the higher a bed the less in a draft it is, I HATE sleeping low near the floor because of this

We used a toddler bed for both ours- they're a good compromise between a cot and a full size single. They're lower to the ground, those with little legs can get in easily (our almost 5yo ds still has problems getting into his single bed) and they're just plain cute!

PS ours had the same toddler bed and were each in it for 2 years and in the end I sold it on ebay for over half of what I paid for it - so no con there! Bargain!!! xx
