Sleep training clocks.

DD1 is 3.5 and recently has started waking really early. It wasnt a problem as she would just play in her room till I went to get her up. Now however she has learnt to open the doors. The handles are higher up on the doors hence just reaching them.
Now she will come into my room at 6am and jump on top of me for a cuddle! Cuddles are nice but not that early! Plus it then makes her really grumpy by 11 as she's so tired.

Been looking at the sleep training clocks but cant decide what to do.

DH thinks we should get a normal digital clock and tell her she can only come in once the first number is 7. Shes very good at numbers.
I do see his point as I wanted to get her a proper bedside clock eventually so she can start recognising times.

Ive seen a few clocks what incorporate both digital and clock face as well as a sleep trainer. Like this These look good but are abit pricey at £35/40.
Are they worth the money?
should we just try a cheapy digital clock first to see if it works? But then if im going to get a dual clock later should I just get one now with the trainer lights included?

Any recommendations?

at that age we just used a digital clock and said they werent to come through until it said 7:00. When dd was younger we used fairy lights on a timer and she wasnt to come through until the lights came on.

We've got the GroClock and been using it for about 9 months. She just ignores it. Short of locking her in (don't feel it's worth going to war over) or bribing her (a technique I don't like) it's completely pointless.

hi just wanted to share, my ds was waking at 5am every morning and it was beginning to get a bit much, we then had a dd and he started waking at night, he was nearly 4 and knew his numbers well but did not stay in bed until the clock said '7', he saw the gro clock in the shop and was excited by it, we used with a reward sticker chart, initially giving a small reward every 3 days and he was sleeping 7 -7 within a matter of days. i will use the sleep training clock with my dd as soon as she can understand it!! only issue with it is that he rarely oversleeps ifyswim, if the sun is up he gets up even he could go back to sleep, but that is the only issue we have!

We are using Onaroo clock with DS who is 3.3. He had started waking at 5-6am as he was not sure whether it was morning or not. I made a big deal of him getting a big-boy clock and it works a treat ! He stays in bed until it turns green - even if he wakes earlier he just waits for it to change Grin. The best bit is that we can change it at the weekend for an extra hour of peace and if he happens to sleep past the 'green hour' it doesn't make a noise so he continues to sleep Grin. Also it does analogue as well as digital display and it has games to help learning to tell the time when he is older. It is definitely the best £40 I have spent on baby/toddler gadgets. Good luck !

we have a monkey one. DD is too small to understand the analgue and digital displays it has but understands that she's not meant to get out of bed til the monkey opens his eyes

The GroClock is fabulous! When dd was waking early after previously being a fan sleeper she took to it straight away.

The only trouble we had was when going without night nappies at first she wouldn't wake us because the sun wasn't on her light! Bless her. She was just about to turn 3 when we got it.

Now we're woken many mornings with excitement that the sun is on her light and it's morning. Grin half 7 or half 8 - whatever we set it for. Wink

It also gives her the independence because she was asking whether it was morning all the time. She absolutely loves it now she can tell us when it's morning. Grin

We have the Kidsleep one for DD1 and it works a treat she know she can't get up until the cow is awake then she is free to call us/come through and climb in bed. it took less than a week and she was sleeping until 7.30

pigleychez · 20/02/2012 13:51

Thanks everyone we ended up buying the Gro clock as a few RL friends recommended it too.
DD loves it and went to bed saturday watching it. Next morning woke to her playing in her room at 7.20am Went into her but 'silly mummy' had set the clock to wake at 7pm! doh.Blush DH did joke about making her wait till the evening :)

Last night I set it properly but she was in my room at 6am telling me her bed was wet. [sigh] Sorted that out and put her back to bed where she stayed till 7.15.

I think generally its helping so im optimistic we might get a lay in one day!

groclock is good but be careful of the glow being too bright - it woke up DS who was used to a very dark room. We've set it to 0 and its better - he gets the idea but at 2.5 hasn;t quite got the disicpline yet Smile

CaptainNemo · 23/02/2012 22:17

Sorry to hi-jack, just found this thread and am currently trying to decide whether to get a clock of some sort for DD (2.5) who has lately started appearing in our room at 5am, 6am, and 6.30 every morning. Am trying to decide between the gro clock or the kidsleep clock, and wondered whether anyone has experience of both/prefers one to the other? I didn't know about the Onaroo clock before, so I guess that's another one to put into the mix Confused If I go for one of the kidsleep options I'm more tempted to go for the travel one here as it's battery operated so I don't need to worry about little hands pulling the lead out in the middle of the night...
Would be grateful for any opinions!

Fizzylemonade · 24/02/2012 13:55

We had the kidsleep clock but that was over 7 years ago! The light isn't too bright and it worked really well for both my boys.

The main issue with all these things is how you deal with them waking before the clock says so.

I lent mine to DH's work colleague, but when her son woke early she just got him up and dealt with it as usual instead of saying it was still time for sleep and leaving him (he was in a cot)

So he ignored the clock as no matter what time it was Mummy still got him out of the cot. Sigh.

pigleychez · 24/02/2012 23:20

Well we havent had the Gro clock long but DD hasn't come wandering into our room at stupid oclock since! :)

She does often still wake about 6/6.30 but stays in bed playing till the sunshine appears on the clock. Now we just need to work on the playing quietly bit!

Monkey though as literally overnight she learnt the buttons and how to work the clock. Even turn the lock off!

Agree the light is quite bright but on the lowest setting its not been a problem.
