Milk at 16 months

Hi,

Just after a little advice really, up until this week my daughter was having 2 bottles of 7-8oz of milk a day. Then all of a sudden she started messing about on her bedtime bottle and not really taking much, she'd be sucking on it as if she was drinking but she wasn't actually drinking much. The last few nights she has had only had 4oz max.

I may have messed up timings here but I thought it was about time she had a cup rather than a bottle in the day (rightly or wrongly I'm happy with her having a bedtime bottle as I feel it's comforting as well as the actual milk) . So anyway I started giving her a cup instead of a bottle yesterday, yesterday she had about 3oz but refused more. Today she had a mouthful and was then upset and wouldn't have more, but asked for milk a few times. She went done for her nap fine.

So, how much milk should she be having at this age, is it essential anymore?

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks

about 350mls (approx 12oz) is advised from 1 year. This doesnt all have to be in drink form as milk in cereal, in foods, etc and other dairy products count towards the total too

My DCs stopped drinking much milk when I stopped giving it to them in a bottle too. My Dr told me cow's milk isn't essential (and I believe there's a fair bit of evidence that it's not that great a source of calcium for humans anyway). Just make sure they're getting what they need from other foods, dairy based or not. If she has a fairly varied diet there's little need to worry. If she's a bit fussy you might want to double check you're covering the basics.

DS is 15 mo and barely drinks milk any more - in fact i was going to post about the same! He's lost interest in his bedtime bottle, though will manage 2oz. He does have it on his cereal and has yoghurts and cheese but getting him to drink it from a cup is a no-no. I suppose when he's a little older he might take to it again but for the time being i'm just trying to give him other sources of calcium.

Another day of her not touching her milk from a cup. She gets quite upset about it and won't have any. She had more of her bed time bottle last night, but still only 4oz approx. She has a good varied diet and has yoghurts, cheese, milk on cereal but how do I know she's having enough?! Should we give up the cup and give her the bottle back so we know she's having some milk? Which is the better? Lose the milk or lose the bottle?

Thanks

Ds is 18 months and has had virtually no milk since I stopped bf at 12 months. He just will not drink it.

He eats a lot of food though so I don't worry about it. Like others have said, milk in cereal, yoghurts, cheese contribute to his calcium intake. I also put a spoonful of cream cheese in any sauce he is having. Means the rest of us can have our spicy sauces/curries as his is calmed down with the cream cheese.
