I hate that nothing works for my poor DS! I hate the doc just keeps pushing me aside with it! I hate the fact he never wears anything nice for more than 30 minutes!!!!!

Is it actually reflux or is it something else? My DS as a baby started to lavishly throw up after every feed, was very poorly, and - after being fobbed off with guesses at 'gastroenteritis' and 'reflux' - it turned out to be a condition which required an operation to correct. I had to make a few waves before it was correctly diagnosed. In your shoes I'd go to a different doctor and keep pushing for answers and treatment.

LiamsMummyJaz · 14/02/2012 12:35

In that case I hope it's reflux! I'm just at my wits end! :( He's really contented which I know sounds strange as he's always sick! I'm going the docs this afternoon AGAIN! If he tells me try ANOTHER brand of milk I might have to hit him!!!

is he growing well? if so, then thats all it is, andyou need to calm down, use your washing machine, and relax somehow. If its a serious problem, then you still need to calm down because you have worse problems than worrying about him wearing nice clothes for less than half an hour.

DS was diagnosed with reflux when he was six months old. Reflux meds made him worse. GP said I was an over reactive mother who should learn that all babies are sick (DS NEVER was until 6 months old!). Went private when he was 13 months and it turned out he had a hernia.

I knew it wasn't reflux as we had to lie DS down after feeding as it was the ONLY time he wasn't sick. With a reflux baby you have to keep them upright to keep it down.

DS was also very contented - he would projectile vomit and then sit there and laugh!!!

Worth asking the doctor?

LiamsMummyJaz · 14/02/2012 13:14

He better neither up or lying down. We don't have a problem when he's asleep though! I am going to the docs at 5 this afternoon so I hope he can do something. He started being sick from the moment he was born. I think that's why he's so contented tbh because he's so used to it.

I know babies are sick. I was expecting it. But he's sick hours after he finishes his bottle (like bile). And even after he's been asleep for 12 hours at night (he is a good sleeper) he's sick Sad

Can you see a different GP? video it and take it along to show them?

Have you considered cows milk protein intolerance? It can make babies sick. Ask for hypoallergenic formula on trial (maybe speak your HV and get them onside then see GP again).

mrsrvc · 14/02/2012 19:14

If it is reflux then it can be a serious problem which causes the baby serious discomfort and can cause them to choke. So it is not simply a case of putting on your washing machine and calming down! The best treatment for reflux is omeprazole , but it needs to be confirmed that it is reflux. Perhaps demand an appointment with a pedestrian?

Hello! Sorry for the late posting! My DS has had a bad couple of days so I requested nicelyGrin to see my gp this afternoon, luckily there was a cancellation so off I went to the docs again!
I saw the student doc before I saw my gp and after my DS chucking up all over him and the floor he say 'he seems to have reflux' I nearly cried! I have been telling them for 15 weeks!! He took me around to see my gp and said he thinks my DS should be prescribed gaviscon. And he actually agreed! So now I'm mixing that in with his bottles. I hope it works I really do. I feel so sorry for my baby. It can't be comfortable for him. He's such a happy baby and he looks so upset when he's sick. Sad

Has anybody had any experience with infant gaviscon?

Thanks for replies ladies. It's much appreciated Smile

My 5 month old ds has reflux and cows milk protein intolerance. Until 12 weeks when we realised what the problem was he was screaming in agony but his paediatrician then prescribed a new formula nutramugen 1 which has hugely helped. Still sick but not in pain. I went through times when it would take 4 hours and several outfit changes for both of us to get out the house in clothes which weren't drenched in puke. The good news is reflux does get better. My Ds is still sick but nowhere near as much. Early weaning is helping and he seems to be beginning to grow out of it. My tips for you would be get some large absorbent waterproof bibs and put them on first. Take lots of spare bibs when you go out and you should be able to avoid needing a change of clothes. Also get extra large muslins. Aden and anais make huge ones which you can buy online. Thirdly lower your expectations. My Ds is never 100% dry around his neck but as long as he's wearing thick enough clothes so he's not wet against his skin and cold we live it. ...

xkatyx · 15/02/2012 20:14

I have my girls on gaviscon, I bought it over the counter. When I went for out 6 week check up I told the doctor they had reflux and she was happy with that and prescribed some for me as there not cheap!!

And it works great, girls some times spit up a little still but nothing to what it was

LiamsMummyJaz · 15/02/2012 22:31

Vidam - he normally wears 2 bibs haha! It just goes so far. We think we've covered every inch in muslin squares but noooo. Lol.

Katy - how much do you put in your LO's bottles. GP says just 1 dose in his bottles but we've read on the box 2 doses for the amount of milk he has. The one dose doesn't seem to be working at all Sad

xkatyx · 17/02/2012 08:47

It goes by babies weight, I think over 10lbs is 2 doses.

My girls only weigh 8lb so they are on 1 dose each feed at the moment.

LiamsMummyJaz · 17/02/2012 10:27

We have just started him on 2 doses. It doesn't stop him being sick flyer his bottle but he hasn't been being sick for the hours he normally is Smile
Do your girls have any problems with constipation? I've heard that gaviscon can cause it?

OP posts:
xkatyx · 18/02/2012 20:34

I haven't heard that before but yeah they are actually my mega but (tmi) they defenetly strain alot more and more playdough like!!

Makes sense now as it started same time, but it doesn't bother them at all.

Tiddlyompompom · 19/02/2012 23:09

Gaviscon didn't work for us, but prob because DS was BF and hated taking the Gaviscon from the syringe, friends DC who take it in their bottle have reacted well. He's been on Ranitidine for the last few months, originally in an infant suspension but that was almost the same quantity as the Gaviscon, so now he's on 0.4ml of the adult version, and it's been great. Much less sick, and less of the obvious burning he used to get get. Now cutting down dosage, as he's taking solids well and upright all day. He still voms a bit, but it doesnt borther him so much, often grins after too. Poor boy still always has a huge muslin bandana, but now it's for teething dribble! Good luck getting it sorted.

fazsaeed · 19/02/2012 23:19

My ds has severe reflux.
He's 17 months. He won't eat anything of a spoon due to pain association.
It's got that bad now that he is going for feeding tube put in tomorrow and further tests.
My word of advise if your dc doesn't want to eat leave it at that otherwise pain association begins.

LiamsMummyJaz · 20/02/2012 09:25

He's now on the double dose of Gaviscon. It's working brill! He started to seem like he was getting a bit constipated but it just seems a little bit more formed (tmi) and is no longer bothering him. I just hope this works and it sorts itself out when he starts sitting up Smile

Gavisgon was a miracle cure for my dd, she too was on a double dose. It was so nice to finally see her in nice clean outfits without a sopping wet bib on top!

We finally managed to wean her off when she was 11 months old.

Glad it's worked for you Smile

LiamsMummyJaz · 20/02/2012 09:53

quitcomplaining - I can't tell you how happy he is!! We didn't think it was affecting him too much but seeing him now he's like a different baby! AND!!! Yesterday he didn't have a bib on for 3 hours!!!! :)SmileSmile
