Hiya,

I graduated last July after finishing my BA at Sussex Uni. Three months before I did my finals I gave birth to my ds who is now almost a year old- time flies! I have applied to do a PGCE in Secondary Education and PG course in Journalism. Two very different courses, but I have an interest in both and am undecided in what to do! Also, I'm concerned about the costs, child care, benefits etc as when I was a FUll time UG it was completely different. Can anyone help please!

I did a PGCE Secondary before I had kids but did find it pretty hard then. 2/3 of your course is spent in school and the rest at uni. When you get into the second term, you are combining university work with planning for lessons, marking etc... You have to be prepared for the fact it is more like a full-time job than a university course. As long as you keep on top of everything, and use the free periods in school to do most of your marking and planning, while doing university work in the evenings, you should be ok.

Thanks Wombat. SO in your opinion would I need afterschool club/extra hours cover for my kids outside school hours? It sounds as though it would be very demanding but I don't mind working in the evenings etc. It's the hours and how to juggle the kids that worries me.

As for childcare, you will be spending about 26 weeks in school (5 days per week)so would need it for then as well as when your at Uni.

MOM, hopefully, you will get a school nearby so you can pick your kids up straight after. Might be worth taking advantage of kids clubs etc... so you can stay a bit later at school to do your work.
